My hp 8510p is password locked in the bios. I received this laptop from my cousin who used it as a business computer. He has since gone over to Mac thus no longer needing the unit but forgot the password.
CMOS resetting by disconnecting battery does nothing. Password failure doesn't offer any 'hash' number or anything reference-wise.
Can't boot to desktop or reformat with boot CD or other media.
Is there anything else I can try?
Thank you
Mark

Power On Password & Hard Disk Password With your next laptop you should protect it with a Power On Password AND put a password on your hard disk. This will stop anyone from using your laptop and if they move the hard disk from your laptop to another laptop they cannot access the data on your hard disk with the hard disk password. BUT you need to write down or remember these passwords; if you lose or forget them you cannot gain access to your laptop. There are no backdoor passwords to remove these passwords. To set up or change these passwords, go to the BIOS configuration - then security configuration. http://techtips.salon.com/reset-hp-laptop-bios-password-1476.html
There
is no universal password. BIOS passwords are protected and generally
cannot be cracked. Some manufactures will fix the password if you send
the system to them with a proof of purchase.
You can check my tip and see if one of the techniques might work for you.

Yes there is a wireless hardswitch on this machine it is 2 to the right of the power button once pressed on the bottom left of the machine an led should light up so you know its activated
If there is another administrator account on the computer you can use that to go into the Users control panel and remove the password. For $30.00 you can purchase ebcd which will allow you to create a bootable CD and change the password using the wizrd from the CD. The ISO file has to be burned to a disk using a progarm like Nero or the free program they have listed on their site. http://www.prime-expert.com/ebcd/index.php
