Question about Carrier 38CKC042 Air Conditioner

2 Answers

Anyone have the service/installation manual for carrier ac model 38ckc042-351? I recently installed humidifier unit and in doing so disconnected the low voltage wires to the ac unit (thermostat wiring). Trouble is......I do not recall how it was wired.....Template was accidentally discarded. When connecting and attempting to turn on I blow 3amp fuse on furnace control board.

Hello, if this is a straight cool unit than you should have a wire going to Y and. C at the control board, this send 24 volts to the ac.

no sir I have a gas furnace.

  • bob boyle Mar 16, 2011

Walter....Thanks, yes I have attempted to find PDF at the Carrier Web Site without success. Do you have the link to the document you mentioned?

  • bob boyle Mar 16, 2011

Sir - what I am in need of is the wiring diagram for the 24v to control board and thermostat. Thanks.

  • bob boyle Mar 18, 2011

Thank you for your post and apologize for the late reply. I have been on duty the past couple days without email access. I tried what you have suggested. I have a gas furnace with an ac unit that has two wires running from the outside of the house to the inside ( white and red ). I connected to the same on the control board and even attempted reversing in case the contractor had reversed when installing the system. When I power the unit on the indoor fan starts and does not power off. When I actually try to turn "Cool" on at the thermostat - I blow the 3amp fuse. Control board looks fine ( no error codes ). I think we're close to a solution, but somewhere something is amiss. The humidifier and the furnace work just fine without the outdoor ac unit wires being connected. Please let me know if you have any other idea's. It may be time to call a TECH. ??? Thanks for your help.

HI, THE 351 ON THE MODEL NUMBER SHOWS NOTHING. BUT THE REST IS CORRECT. IF THIS IS A HEAT PUMP, IT WILL HAVE MANY MORE CONTROL WIRES. IF YOU ARE BLOWING THE CONTROL FUSE YOU HAVE A DEAD SHORT. GO TO THE OUTDOOR UNIT AND WRITE DOWN THE COLOR AND AMOUNT OF WIRES COMING OUT OF THE UNIT, AND WHAT COLOR THEY ARE CONNECTED TO. THESE GO BACK TO THE INDOOR UNIT. RED IS ALWAYS YOUR HOT, Y IS FOR COOLING, G IS FOR FAN, AND W IS FOR HEATING. IF YOU HAVE ORANGE, BROWN, PURPLE BLACK AND SO ON COMING FROM THE OUTDOOR UNIT, YOU HAVE A HEAT PUMP. ON A SIMPLE CENTRAL UNIT, ONLY 2 WIRES TO THE OUTDOOR UNIT, RED AND WHITE. RED TO RED, WHITE TO Y ON THE INDOOR UNIT. LOOK AT THE SCHEMATIC ON THE INDOOR AND OUTDOOR UNIT, AND IT WILL SHOW YOU WHAT COLOR GOES WHERE, JUST LOOK AT THE LEGEND FOR THE LOW VOLTAGE CONNECTIONS AND THERMOSTAT, AND FOLLOW IT. YOU WILL NOT NEED ANY MANUAL. MAKE SURE YOUR RED WIRE IS NOT TOUCHING METAL ANYWHERE. KEEP ME POSTED ON THE OUT COME, WE WILL HAVE UP UP AND RUNNING. LET ME KNOW IF YOU HAVE A HEAT PUMP.

Correction, Red to Red from condenser to indoor, and white to Common not yellow or it will run all the time. My mistake, sorry.

Humidifier Running Continuously with Fan Blower

As long as the humidifier start/stop is regulated by air flow there is no way to cycle it on/off with another device. If, however you disconnect that capability and, instead wire it to the heat on cool on switch it will only turn on when the stat calls for heating or cooling. You may need to install an intermediate relay off the stat wires to regulate the different(assuming that they are) voltage of the humidifier start/stop.What a fun project, thanks!

Dan is this a new system, or has some work on the system (to include the thermostat) been done recently?

Sounds like the thermostat may be wired wrong. From what you describe, the igniter element is coming on, as though you are calling for heating. Do you allow the ignitor to keep going and see if the gas fires off, or are you seeing this and shutting down the system immediately?

If you had the t-stat changed recently, or this is a new system, contact the installing contractor. It may be under warranty.
