Question about Denon AVR-987 Receiver

1 Answer

I have a Denon-987 receiver. I setup the speaker to the manual instructions, but I cannot hear output when I run the test. This is a demo unit. Should I run a factory reset? Are there other diagnostics to test before I take it back?

There's no user parameter for "no sound during Test Tones" so a reset would be futile.

Carefully examine the front panel for clues like a misplaced Mute, Tape control or Multichannel Analog (EXT) Input selected.

Why does only center channel speaker work?

Try running a sound test. You should have a test mode that will play a sound through each speaker to see if you have them hooked up correctly. If you still only hear it from the center, unhook the center and connect it to another speaker output, say right front. Run the test again. If you hear something from that center speaker, its the speakers. If not, try each speaker output to make sure the results are the same. If so, you may have an internal board problem.
Good Luck!

Denon receiver not working surround output

If everything is connected correct, the only thing I can think of, is you don't put in a surround signal. If you only feed 2 way stereo, only two speaker will work. Also if you switch to stereo, the other channels will stop working. Check the cables, the settings and the input.

I think you need to set the front speakers as "small" in speaker setup menu.

I had the unit set to a second zone that ran into a splitter for four different areas of my house. The second zone is not working, how do I test to see if it is the denon unit or the splitter ?

Plug something other than Zone 2 into the splitter, say, any tape out on the Denon. Keep it simple. Play FM.

When and if THAT works go back to the manual and analyze why Zone 2 isn't working. Observe the Zone 2 Output indicator. (Page 5)

You must have a TV or other speaker-capable device that you can run Zone 2 OUT to. Try that to prove your setup works.

I am trying to hook my Bose Acoustimass 15 Series II surround speakers using a Denon AV Surround Receiver AVR-1804/884 to my Sony DVD player and Panasonic LCD TV. I have the speakers all connected...

If the speakers work with test tones this has nothing to do with them and all to do with your attachment and setup of the sources.

Stop guessing. Have you looked at all the manuals?

The other devices you're inquiring about are not named in your post. Name the makes and models first, then we'll look for the manuals. Then (maybe) find a solution. You could run them by the manufacturers' support sites or these guys...

Yamaha RX-V365 Receiver when I hook up my center channel it is not audible at all. The R and L speakers work fine when they were located in the FRONT A and FRONT B terminals, but when I moved everything to...

With what signal did you try? Maybe your signal source (DVD/TV or radio) didn't contain any sounds for the center channel.
Go to the Setup menu, Speaker setup / Manual setup and find there item called "Test tone". It will output a test tone to each speaker individually (you will see on LCD which speaker is being tested at each moment). If you will hear a sound from the center now, there is no issue and center is working fine, just your source didn't contain any sound for the center.

If it doesn't work, then either you have faulty cable, faulty speaker or faulty center output of the receiver.
- Try connecting the center speaker to different output of receiver (this will test if speaker is OK).
- Try connecting working LEFT speaker to left output with CENTER cable (this will test if cable is OK).
- Try connecting working LEFT speaker with working cable to the CENTER output (this will test the output of receiver if OK - but use the Test Tone from Setup).

Clestion S10 Sub not working

Instead of connecting it to the sub output, try it on the L or R output of your amp.
This will eliminate the Denon.
If this fails, you need to test the loudspeaker driver unit whilst disconnected from the sub amp. Use a 1.5v cell (AA or bigger) connect using croc leads to the speaker's terminals. If the speaker is OK, you should hear a click. If you hear nothing, the speaker unit is faulty.

Wiring speakers to denon avr 3802

Those are not compatible speakers for this unit. The Denon receiver does not have any speaker outputs for that type of speaker.

The Denon speaker outputs are full range outputs. Your speakers are not designed for that, they need an amplifier that has seperate outputs for the highs and lows.

By using these speakers you will probably damage them and they will not sound very good as well. The tweeters will end up fried and it is also likely that if one of the speakers goes bad, it will blow one of the channels in the amplifier.

If you really want to do it anyways, and don't say I didn't warn you, you could connect them using the "A" and "B" speaker outputs. Connect the woofers on one set, lets say "A", and the tweeters on the other, lets say "B". Right channel "A" would be the woofer and right channel "B" would be the tweeter for one speaker.

When listening to the unit you would need to engage both the "A" and "B" speaker to hear anything from both speakers, there are buttons on the display for the speakers marked "A" and "B" and in the display you would see little icons that light up when the speakers are engaged.

I can not stress it to you enough that this is not a good idea to use these speakers with this type of receiver. Do this at your own risk and be prepared to pay about $150 to $200 for the repair bill after the amp blows a channel.

Denon AVR-987 System setup lockout

YOU NEED TO HAVE A MONITOR OUT CABLE FROM THE DENON COMPOSITE, S-VIDEO, COMPONENT OR HDMI TO AND UNUSED INPUT ON THE TV.
SELECT THAT INPUT ON THE TV AND PRESS THE SETUP BUTTON ON THE DENON REMOTE AND YOU SHOULD GET A VIDEO SIGNAL ON THE TV TO UNLOCK
