Question about Seagate FreeAgent Go 320 GB USB 20 Hard Drive

3 Answers

I have a Seagate 320 GB 9kw2ag-500 that I have had for a couple of years it worked fine until one day I did not pull out the plug correctly and now I cannot seem to get power to the unit (as all the little lights on top dont light up any more when plugged in). I think I wrecked a connection in the plug. Is there a way I can talk this thing apart to restore the connections long enough to transfer data to the main computer hard drive and then onto a newer model hard drive that I have purchased? There appears to be no way to open the unit up to even see if I have cracked a circuit board or wrecked any connections. And, by me unplugging the unit (the way I did) I believe any warranty is out of the question. Please advise? Bill

Hi,
Just open the case, it contain a normal harddrive that you can place inside your computer or in a new enclosure so you can get the data backedup.
Here is how to open the enclosure:

Billyboy -- Firstly, did you try it in another USB port or another computer's USB port? Secondly, you might have damaged the cable but it's unlikely that you've cracked a circuit board or anything that drastic.

As you know the unit has a five-year warranty and from your description of what happened there is NOreason to assume that the warranty is voided. I would NOT go cracking open the case and certainly voiding your warranty! I would call Seagate about service and getting an answer to whether they do anything to preserve the data on a returned external USB drive under warranty.

So until they tell you they don't try to save data I would be calm for now and don't try to be a PC Tech if you don't have the experience. Then you can decide how to proceed.

Good Luck,

Mikeywaf

Tip

OMG! it worked! I have a 500 gb seagate and I dropped it very hard on the floor....

My hard drive was dead and wasn't recognized by the computer, it didn't even start, just a few clicking noises, which according to some of the experiences is the same as a DEAD Hardisk. Anyways, as I read that sometimes this happens as a result of a hit, well, I wacked my HD as a last hope for it to recover its "memory" (as in the movies) and believe me or not, it worked! I don't know if this might help yours, but it saved mine!
The way I did it was like this: I started the pc and when the HD started to run and I heard a couple of clicks, I hit it against the table while in vertical position (assuming that the arm of the HD might slightly move better that way) one time, and then when the spinning and the first click was heard agin I hit again. After that I heard the typical searching sound of a HD, and you can imagine I started to pray that what I heard wasn't my anxiety sound (if it has any). Now I am a firm believer in the old trick of whacking the old TV to get the vital signal back!
Good luck to you too!

Seagate 9sd2a3-500 320 GB Problem

Improve the Fixya experience for everyone by voting!

It sounds as though you have one of the following problems:

  1. Dirty contacts that can be cleaned with CRC electronic component cleaner;
  2. A faulty drive that may have been dropped at some point in time. Your drive may have a three-year warranty and Seagate will replace it. Just go online and provide the serial number; and.
  3. You may have to reinstall the drivers. The Seagate website can provide this if needed.

Hello.pls my seagate free go version 320 gb harddisk fell down and afterwards its not being detected again on my vista o/s.pls any corrective measure is really appreciated

dropping a hard drive is one of the worst things you can do to a drive specially if it was running. More than likely if the heads crashed against the platers you will need to replace the drive.

Check the partition size in Disk Management (if running Win7 - download a free Partition Manager if not) and see if the system is seeing the partition correctly. Seagate has recovery software available on their website but you may just have to repartition and reformat.

Do a FULL POWER DOWN Reboot. and try a different USB outlet in the PC... same Laptop to see if it is in your PC that is causing the problem.
Note: Most of those Drives do stop unless they are connected to the PC... energy savings.
If that didnt work... you could have a failed drive. Seagate should help you do some diag if it is in warranty... typically 3 years.
