Question about Denon DRA-685 Receiver
First solution would be to try and use the remote. If the remote is able to, the problem is in the knob. If the remote does not work, the problem resides in the volume board.
The problem resides in the circuitry that the knob is controlling. Unfortunately this knob has a full range of motion, which means that it is simply controlling a computer chip within the unit. (i have an 1801 as well). What has happened is that some component on the volume board has gone bad, which is resulting in your non functioning volume knob.
Unfortunately this is usually a job for a professional.
If you have standard electronics skills (soldering / disassemble / reassemble), you can open the case and find where the volume knob leads to. There should be a smaller board, and see if you can access it. Usually they are rather hard to get to, or to get free to actually see what is going on. The best solution would be to find a parts receiver, and swap boards. This shotgun approach changes everything. Otherwise, look for any damaged components on the board. Swap out any components that are damaged, or appear damaged with comparable replacements.
