the watch movement deters which battery the watch needs it is very important you do not put a battery in that doesn't suit the watch as it can short out the circuit however you can get the correct size in a gold seal quality which should not leak, also the older the watch, the more demanding the watch becomes on the battery as the movement components start to experience wear and tear
Although your watch is solar-power all Eco-Drive watches contain a rechargeable battery known as a capacitor. They last longer than a regular battery but are difficult to get replaced because nobody carries them. Firstly I assure you whoever opened the watch did damage it. The solar sell is under the dial so removing the back would not have exposed it to anything. Rechargeable batteries do not hold a charge forever and do need to be replaced every 5-10 years. In order to know which capacitor you need you need to find out what movement model is in the watch (this is different than the model number of the watch you must physically look at the movement) (unlike batteries capacitors all have the same number on the cell so you need to know the movement number to order the proper size). Once you have obtained the capacitor repairing your watch because no more difficult then changing a battery. I'd ask those people to take the back off again so you can find out what movement is in the watch. Typically it's a 4 digit number but sometimes it also has letters in front of it and I've also seen them with only 3 digits. If you could supply me with the movement number I can supply you with a the proper capacitor at a price of $45 with free shipping and tracking.
This watch operates on a capacitor which is charged by movement. It does not wind, but it has a weight that charges the capacitor by motion.
Take the watch in hand by placing your fingers under the caseback and your thumb on the crystal. Use a horizontal motion (landscape) to move the watch back and forth quickly approximately one foot left and right. You should feel the internal weight move.
Do this for at least five minutes. If the watch does not start to operate (the second hand does not move at one second increments) then either the capacitor must be replaced, or the movement is defective.
You may send the watch directly to Seiko for service, or I would strongly suggest visiting your local Certified Master Horologist for what is usually a free assessment and estimate of the repair.
If you are following the above directions, you have done nothing wrong, but the movement or capacitor needs to be replaced.
If you have just purchased this watch and the instructions do not resolve your situation, I would promptly return it and exchange it, as the model may have been sitting for a while, and have a bad capacitor.
There is a reset procedure for most LCD watches to reset the LCD after installing the battery. It is different for every watch brand and movement (inner works). I recommend visiting your local Certified Master Horologist for proper battery and resetting procedure.
Improperly resetting any digital watch by shorting the wrong connection can essentially short out the movement, and the movement / watch must then be replaced, whichever is least expensive.
It is unlikely that the capacitor will have any charge on it so you should shake it gently to charge it up. You certainly can't do any harm by charging it, even if the capacitor did have any charge.
How old is the watch? If its an older automatic watch it might need to be cleaned! There are 2 types of auto wind watches. Springs or capacitor! If its a spring then take the watch off of your wrist and while holding it in your hand gently rock it back and forth. You should feel the weight moving around inside. If its a capacitor and doesnt start to run after you gently rock it in your hand then you need to take it to a watch repair business and see if they can replace the capacitor!
if the watch is solar power it may not be getting enough to last through the night. if it is battery powered it may just be stuck when in certin postion like upside down or somthing
