Question about Western Digital Caviar SE WD1600JS (WD1600JS20PK) 160 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

I have a WD1600JS. The transfer rate is less than 1Mb per second. It is very slow. How do I fix it? I connect it with a USB to IDE/SATA cable to my Windows 7 Ultra

Do you know if the USB port you are using is USB 1.0 or not? if so that would make sense since the transfer rates for USB 1.0 are around there.

Disk transfer should be around 22 or more MB/second so there is most likely an issue with the drive itself. If you have another machine I would try connecting it to that just to rule out issues with the drive itself.

You should check what kind of hard drive is using your computer. If it has less then 5 years probably hard drives are sata.

Can i put my compaq presario 2200 hard drive on another laptop..if so which one?

You should place the drive from the Presario 2200 in an 2.5" external enclosure or use a USB/SATA/IDE adapter. (If you want to use an external enclosure, you will need to check if your drive has a SATA or IDE connection and get the correct type.)

If you replace the drive in a working laptop with the non-working drive, you will probably get the same issue. The error suggests that the Presario can't find an OS on that drive. At best, you will see errors due to drivers and Windows seeing a new CPU and motherboard.

When you connect via a USB connection, you be able to attempt to find the files on the old drive. This will be slow (limited by the USB speed). If you had a desktop, you could get faster transfers. If there is a free 3.5" bay, you will need a 2.5" to 3.5" drive adapter. Then you would need some adapters for the IDE connection to the motherboard (if the old drive is IDE and the motherboard supports IDE). Make sure the drive is on the "Slave connection" of an IDE cable and set for Slave or Cable connect. There are IDE to SATA adapters or PCIe cards that will support adding drives if your motherboard can't accept more drives.

Good luck. I hope this helps.

I really need a detailed explanation of my bios settings for the p7p55de lx so i can better understand the bios

All I can add is locating the bottleneck. You are always at the mercy of the slowest point. For, instance USB 2 is less than 500 mb/s and cuts the SATA 2 by 600%. Then you have the SD class 10 card in the USB at top speed of 80 mb/s. Your 3gb/s hd is now transferring at 80mb/s, and that's best case scenario.

I didn't look up your mobo for SATA to SATA, but you get the idea. GL

I want to download all info from my desktop and motherboard into mylaptop

Hi Eva!

If your desktop is crashed, then you will need to verify if its internal hard drive is still working, and then conect it using an USB/SATA/IDE adapter to your Laptop. This is one: http://www.sataadapter.com/SATA-IDE-ATA-66-ATA-100-ATA-133-COMBO-ADAPTER/sata-ide-adapter-usb-hard-drive-sata-drive.html

If the problem with your desktop is with its hard drive, then... you need to take your computer to its manufacturer technnical service center.

Hello, You need to right click on to my computer>Manage>choose disk management, you should format the new SATA HDD there.

If that will work for you that is good but if not, i thing you should updated the BIOS and you have to make sure that you get that update to MSI website. if you are not familiar w/ that asked some one who know how to flash BIOS. it is risky if you are not familiar doing BIOS update!!!

Which hard disc drive is better for pc sata or pata.

hi SATA in my opinion is better, one for air circulation also speed, and the modern motherboards can have from 2 to 6+ SATA ports, which is better than just having 2 ports for 4 items, so i would go for a SATA any day...hope that helps

Sata power supply with ide only mother board?

Unlike IDE drive cables, which allow you to connect at least 2 drives to the same cable, SATA cables only allow one connection from motherboard to drive per cable. You can connect as many SATA drives to your motherboard as you have SATA connections.

In my motherboard manual(ASUS P5GV-TMX) specifications there is an entry showing storage/RAID -- 1 x UltraDMA 100/66/33 4 x Serial ATA First are those speeds ?? So does this mean it doesnt support UDMA...

You have 1 IDE connector (1 X UltraDMA) labeled PRI_IDE on your MB that uses a flat ribbon cable to connect with hard drives or optical drives that use that type of connection. The 100/66/33 are transfer rates: 100 MB/s, 66MB/s, or 33MB/s. These connections are quickly becoming a thing of the past and being replaced by the faster SATA (Serial ATA) connections which have transfer rates of 150 MB/s to 300MB/s. Your motherboard has 4 SATA connectors. (4 X Serial ATA)

Thanks for using Fixya.

Hard drive

According to http://reviews.zdnet.co.uk/hardware/desktops/0,1000000973,10004197,00.htm this tower has Serial ATA, or SATA. Just to confirm, you can easily pop open the case and take a look at the hard-drives. If you see a wide thin ribbon-like cable connecting to your hard-drive then you need an Ultra ATA (or just ATA or IDE) drive. It looks like this:

If a thinner red cable connects to your drive, then that is SATA. It looks like this:
