Question about Car Audio & Video

1 Answer

Hello I just purchased a 09 Mitsu Lancer GT, and on my way from the dealership yesterday my radio first lost FM signal then the speakers let out a thump ( 9v Battery to a Subwoofer kind of thump). this only last about 3 sec...once i got home, i took the time to get the bluetooth paired and FM channels Setup, nothing out of the ordinary until the speakers thumped again, this time the stereo completely stopped and displayed Error DC on the display. I was able to clear the error by turning the car off from the ACC position (the car was not actually runing at the time of programing). there Error came back this morning on my way in to work while on the highway (was not touching the radio, had it on FM listening to the morning traffic) Called the Dealrship and they seemed Clueless, but asked that i bring it in for troubleshooting. Wondering if there is anything that might speed up their troubleshooting as it is my only car. Thank you Dan

Your response does explain the loss of signal in one way. When i lost the signal i was being passed by another car, when it got far enough i got it back. Assuming an FM transmitter for MP3 or iPod. I drive this strech of hiway daily and have not had the issue with previous cars.

What is still a mistery is the thump sound out of the speakers before the error message: Error DC, is displayed on the stereo. It has happened while either parked or driving. the Error DC that displays on the stereo.

    Thank you

Hi

For any given power of wave transmitted, regardless of the frequency: a radio wave will lose power the further it propagates from the transmitter source because of the square distance law (the further away from a point source, the square root of the power is received). - Atmospheric absorbtion: the atmosphere both aids in the propagation of the radio waves (the ionosphere, tropospheric bending), but it also absorbs a portion of the wave.

Satellite radios are designed to have either signal or silence -- no static. So if you're hearing static, there's a problem with whatever is connecting your XM radio with your car's receiver... most likely an FM transmitter. If it is an FM transmitter, it could be interference from a station that broadcasts on a similar (though not identical) FM frequency to the one your XM transmitter is tuned to.

If, for example, you have your transmitter set to broadcast on 88.7, and there's a station in the next county at 88.9, it might cause interference when the signal from the next county is strong... say when there's a lot of clouds, or there aren't any mountains between you and the transmitter, or whatever. This can also come up when other people have FM transmitters (for their iPod, say) tuned to the same frequency, and you pull up next to them at an intersection.

Due to something called the capture effect, the strongest FM signal wins when two similar or close frequencies compete... thus, an alternative is to get your transmitter antenna closer to your radio antenna... You may still get some dropouts when driving right by a powerful station, but it should be less frequent. If you are driving in the same area all the time, perhaps you would benefit from getting a list of the specific FM stations in your immediate area.

However the antenna connection can be hardwired. The connector goes in between your antenna's cable and the input jack on the deck, so that it overrides the antenna with the signal coming from the XM unit when one is sent.

    Hi

The error DC means one of your speaker's connector got lose and are touching the metal body of the car giving a shortcut. Please check your speakers wiring. Basically it is shorted speaker cable, use a multimeter on continuity, one lead on body of car usually door keep and other going through speaker connections and find out what wire is grounded.

Please get back to us if you have further query else please accept the suggestion.

Radio codes

You can acquire these at your local dealership device dept. for free if you take the serial # from the radio (on the radio itself so you will have to remove it) and proof of ownership (registration). Im most cases the radio card is in the glove box with the owners manual but if its been lost of your purchasing a new radio this is the only free option other then paying someone online for radio codes and I believe they charge something like $35.

How to tune the radio onto fm

Attach the wired headsets, because they will act as the FM antenna. Then, go to 'Menu > Entertainment > FM radio'. Once there, go to 'Options > Auto scan > Yes'. You can make it play through the speakerphone too, by going to 'Options > Listen via speaker'. You can also make it keep playing FM radio while you make other things with your phone, by going to 'Options > Play in Background'.
Hope it works for you.
Cheers! Carlos

Go 730 not sending a fm signal

Hi,

If you have made a recent update this may be the reason you may have lost your FM transmission!!

Tom Tom disabled silent FM transmission on these units to comply with the law in certain countries which prohibit these FM transmissions. Later updates configured the units to output lower strength FM transmissions.

There is a possible workaround for this - see this link for a discussion on the issue.

Hope this helps. Thanks for using FixYa

My Nuvi 750 has stopped talking, still shows the map but no voice

That has happened to me several times. When it happens I go to Tools > Settings > Language. In my case, the Voice field is empty, so I click on the Voice field and then select American English-Jill (TTS) and it's okay afterwards.
