Question about Mitsubishi Mr. Slim MXZ30TN Air Conditioner

Mistsu ductless unit compressor began running in reverse after a "technician" replaced a valve, recharged, and restarted. Follow up visit from "Technician" revealed that he had grounded a sensor when re-assembling the unit. Is it possible this caused the reversal? Appears compressor is now trash.

THANKS ...... it appears you've verified my belief that the compressor failure was caused by the grounding of the sensor by the technician. Appreciate your help.

Hello
This must be a 3 phase compressor. If one of the 3 hot wires is reversed to the compressor, then yes it can make the unit run in reverse.

What will happen is that any oil will be taken out of the compressor and forced into the system causing the compressor to burn up.
Another possibility is if one hot wire went to ground this would cause something called single phasing.Say the compressor needs 220 volts to run and you take half of that away, leaving it with 120 volts. The compressor will draw more amps and burn up.

What i dont understand is there should be fuses and pressure switches to protect the compressor from damage.
So yes it is possible if a sensor went to ground to do serious damage.

Unit runs but will not cool. Followed troubleshooting diections in manual with no luck. Wondering if there is a refridgerant recharge path which is not in the manual

recharging with gas will not be in the manual as it is done using pressure gauges and is a job for an experienced refrigeration technician
call one in as it may not be a gas problem but compressor not running or a blocked tx valve

How can the gas be refilled in the freezer unit

I can explain how to do it but you will need a F-Gas certified professional refrigeration technician to do this job.

If you unscrew the 4 screws to the compressor closet, you will see a copper stump on the side of the compressor, that stump used to have an access valve that allows refrigerant to be measured into the refrigeration system. For gas to be reapplied a technician will have to re-braze a valve onto that stump in order to recharge refrigerant into the system.

I have a Mitsubishi heat pump that runs well but the outdoor unit does not defrost what could be the problem.

Why does my heat pump ice up in Winter?
Heat pumps naturally ice-up in the winter. It is normal for the entire coil to be covered in a white frost and even light ice, during cold weather conditions. However, it is bad for the entire unit to be encased in ice. This indicates ductless heat pump problems which should be addressed quickly to save energy and avoid serious damage to your ductless unit. These systems should periodically go into a defrost cycle. This keeps the unit running efficiently. If the coils are blocked by ice, proper heat transfer between the coil and the outside air will not occur.
How does the defrost mode work?
When the mini split heat pump goes into defrost, the reversing valve inside of the outdoor unit is energized, switching the system from heat to the air conditioning mode. The outdoor coil becomes the hot, the indoor coil becomes cold, and both - the outdoor and indoor fans shut off. This allows the outdoor coil to melt accumulated ice. When the built-in micro-computer analyzes that all ice have been melted, the heat pump heating system goes back to heating mode.
sanyo-mini-split-defrost.pngA cloud of water vapor may be seen rising over the outdoor unit and a "whoosh" sound can be heard as the refrigerant reverses direction. The entire process usually takes up to 10 minutes (depending on conditions).
How often does the system goes into defrost mode?
Ductless mini-split heat pumps have different ways of determining when to go into defrost. The built-in microcomputer determines outdoor temperature, refrigerant pressures, and several other factors. In colder temperatures the system will go into defrost more often than in warmer.
If a ductless mini split heat pump is severely iced-up in the winter it is possible that it isn't defrosting (though there could be many other causes). Let the manufacturer certified technician check your system

LG Ductless Mini Split System LAN125hv: Heat pump doesn't run.

First check your circuit breaker or fuse that supplies power to the outside unit. It's probably separate from the inside unit. Then try to turn unit on. If the fan and compressor just make a humming sound then turn it off and check the capacitor if you have a multimeter. You can also look at it and see if the top looks expanded. That's a good sign its bad, but not all bad one's look expanded. Tomorrow I will have access to an LG service manual and can let you know what the code means. Sorry I can't get it sooner. Let me know what you find.

''EMI'' heat w/ac acts weird.

Hi, what you have here is a ductless heat-pump split system. In the heat mode the compressor will run on a heat pump as it uses a reversing valve to reverse the flow of freon to heat your house. If it gets cold enough, the stat will call for the emergency heat strips to energize to come on for back up. Now, if the unit does not come on or go off when the thermostat calls for either heat or cool to come on and it just does it whenever it wants to, the stat will have to be replaced with a new one. If you plan on doing this your self, I would get the exact same heat-pump stat as you have because they make so many different models that the wiring may be much different and you will be lost when you go to wire it up. The heat - pump has many more control wires on them then the conventional heat/ac unit. So make it easy on your self and get the same one. They are easy to replace. If it is ignoring the settings its the stat. Heat strips and compressor running in the heat position together are normal for a heat- pump.
Sincerely,
Shastalaker7

I have a goodman heat pump and i suspect a bad reversing valve

Sounds like reversing valve is stuck or metering device or check valve is stuck open. If it is a scroll compressor on 3 phase you may need to reverse 2 motor leads. try tapping reversing valve with rubber mallet when running. This may have done in last compressor by sending discharge gas to suction side.

A/c with heat pump. only runs by-pass mode no cool

If you remove the coil from the rev valve it will burn out the coil. So do not do this. Now if the charge is low (static charge to me means at rest or at start up with no load) the rev valve cannot reverse its self. It has to have enough refrigerant to make the reversing valve switch possession

By by pass mode do you mean in the heating mode?.

If this has helped you any please rate me as high as you can if you need more information please post and I'll try answer more, but give me as much information as you can. type of refrigerant, both fans operational, clean filters, all ducts open, what kind of heating electric or gas, your locality : coastal, inland, humidity....
