I want sony to fix or replace my PS3 ($180 In Toronto), will they still do it since i aleady voided my warrenty by not having a Receipt

Plus the part OF ME OPENING IT UP????

  • cindypink Jan 06, 2009

We did the same thing. We opened it and cleaned out the dust, and cleaned the lazer and it still didn't work. we ordered a part from ebay (lazer) and installed it and now it says disk error. We also did a full system restore before putting in the part. My son contacted sony before we did this and we had 7 days of warranty left. We didn't find the receipt. So while my boyfriend was taking the machine apart, my son called sony telling them that we cannot find the receipt. They said some type of bank statement or something would work. I found the statement and sony arranged for a box to be sent to us to ship it in. By this time, my boyfriend already opened the unit and replaced the part which did not work.

Hello. You are very welcome. I'm glad to help. Please rate my solution accordingly.

There is a very easy way to clean the laser. You dampen a Q-tip with rubbing alcohol. Blot it with a napkin so that it doesn't look saturated at all. To much will damage the laser beyond repair. With the Q-tip between your fingers lightly touch it to the lens of the laser and slowly spin it on the surface. Repeat 1 more time with the other side of the Q-tip. Let it sit for 10 min, put back together and it should work fine. As long as the laser diode isn't bad already.

Now for disassembly. That is a bit more challenging! I have had MUCH practice and have damaged a few parts as I was teaching myself how to refurbish these units. I am currently working on a disassembly guide to replace the laser assembly. I still recommend calling Sony as they may fix or replace it for free. If you are set on doing it yourself please just hit my ask me button again and I will send you directions.
Good luck to you.

Wont read disk, disks are clean. restored system still not reading disks

This is typical of a failure of the laser lens and is very common on the PS3 unfortunately.

The only solution is to replace the laser. If the unit is out of warranty Sony will charge $150 to repair it. However if you are reasonably handy you can buy a replacement laser from around $30 and do it yourself. Ebay is a good source for these replacement lasers. Make sure you order the correct part as there are a few different versions used depending on when your Ps3 was made. You will need to open the unit and check the part no on the laser prior to ordering if you decide to do this.

More information on how to do this repair including exact video footage to demonstrate the procedure is here

I would rate it as a simple to medium level of skill required. No soldering involved.

My playstation 3 does not recognize the PS3 disc's anymore but does still read the PS2 disc's. Is the Bluray going out? Can i buy just that part to fix it?

Hi,

The answer to your question is a definite Yes.

This is a very common problem with the PS3 and is most often caused by a problem with the laser on the Bluray drive which is malfunctioning and can no longer 'see' or read the game disk properly.

The PS3 uses a dual laser system. This consists of either a dual refractor type lens or two entirely seperate lenses depending on which pickup is fitted to your particular system. One laser is for reading ordinary DVD disks and PS2 disks and the other for Bluray and PS3 games.

The symptoms you describe are quite typical of a failure of the Bluray laser whilst the other laser is still functioning to read DVDs and PS2 discs.

For more information on how to resolve the problem please have a look at this FixYa Tip on the subject.

My ps3 is not reading discs

Hi,

This problem is common with the PS3 and typical of a failure of the bluray drive. It can sometimes be resolved by cleaning the laser pickup lens but often the lens itself needs to be replaced.

For a full breakdown on the issues involved please view this FixYa Tip.

If this helps please do leave a vote for the solution.

How do i clean my laser in my ps3 drive?

You can try using a disc cleaning kit, but that rarely makes a difference for the PS3.

It probably needs a new laser because the old one is "burnt out". It's areally common problem with them.

You could replace the laser or the entire Bluray drive.

I buy my parts at http://parts.consolerepairguy.com - the lasers areabout $75 each and Bluray drives are about $100. (thos are Canadianprices, ships to the US though)

I run a repair business and that place has best prices aside from Hong Kong which I don't trust.

PS3 Freezes with all blu-ray type discs.

You are Partially right.
Ps3 actually work with 2 different diode laser inside.one is Blue and one is red and both working on 2 separate circuit but with the same coil.i do believe the blue diode is dead or defective and that`s why you are able to read dvd(regular one) but no blu ray dvd or ps3 games.Try to clean your lens or replace your laser and you will resolve your problem
