Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

Just purchased a 2TB iomega eGo ext drive. Took it out of the box, connected it to me MAC and started backing up the data on my computer. AFter a few minutes it disappeared from my desktop - now it won't mount again no matter what I do. I tried different UBS ports, cables, rebooting, turning the drive off & on - all the solutions on the Iomega site. The light on the eGo either flickers constantly or it stays on without blinking on computer start up. I can't get it recognized my any of my PC or Mac computers. It must be defective but I can't send it back with partial data on it and I can't get it mounted to erase the data that transferred. What should I do to get it to mount?

I suppose that's a solution but if I open the drive, I won't be able to return it to Amazon....but it may be the only way out of this.

If problem is with drive, this may not work. If problem is with enclosure, you have to open the enclosure, extract the drive and get a HDD dock (usually around $15-$30) and access the drive that way.

If the data you did manage to transfer over is not security sensitive, you should just just have Amazon replace it. If it is sensitive, you may have to extract the drive and wipe it. Or maybe find somewhere/something with big magnet and pass it over a few times.

Thanks - the data is security sensitive so I do have to erase it. I'll take the drive out and put into a housing, wiping it clean and place it back before I return it to Amazon. Now I'm just confused as to what manufacturer to try next. My faith in Iomega has been shot!. Thanks for helping.

It if turns out to be the drive itself, I would highly recommend that you get a Samsung internal 3.5" HDD and purchase a separate enclosure for it. Samsung spinpoint drives are usually very highly rated.
You can check out newegg.com for some cheap external enclosures.

Iomega eGo Helium 1TB has a damaged PCB. Local 1TB Casing do detects the HDD and its Drives. BUT asks for Formating the Drives. Which case can be purchased. how to recover the data. ?

It might be tricky, but you can remove the hdd from its casing, and install into a pc with compatible connections as a slave drive. Make sure to handle the drive carefully, and try to copy any data you want to another drive on the pc, then run chkdsk X: /f /r on the affected drive.
Another possible solution is to rightclick on My Computer, Manage, go to the drive mangement menu, and rightclick on the drive, and import it into your system so that windows can recognize it.

one thing that is possible, is that you may have another drive letter assigned to the letter the iomega is trying to use.

Try this....Click on your start orb and type in Disk Management.
open the Disk Management utility in Windows and see if you see the iomega drive listed in the list of disks on the bottom.

If you DO see the iomega drive there, make sure it shows a healthy partition (It should say something like Fat 32 or NTFS as the file system type...if it shows "RAW" or "damaged" or something like that, you may need to erase and format the drive)

Then, try right clicking on the drive and choosing "Change Drive Letter and Paths..."
from there try a new drive letter in case you already have another peripheral using the drive letter the iomega drive is trying to grab. This could cause Windows to recognize the drive but still be unable to see it in your explorer.

Good Luck

Iomega eGo 1TB USB 3.0 Portable portable harddisk 500GB. while connected to PC show an error on desktop "insufficient power on USB hub port" . pls suggest

Few different things are possibilities.
1. Are you connecting the device via USB 3.0 to the USB 3.0 adapter on the computer? 2. Try switching out your USB 3.0 cable for a different one. 3. If you are using the USB 2.0 instead. Make sure you are using the USB Y cable for the device and not just a standard USB 2.0 straight cable. Using the USB Y cable. Plug the cable into the device first, then make sure to plug both USB's into the computer starting with the short side USB then the longer side USB second. Also try using the USB's on the back side of the computer as they will supply more power than the USB's on the front of the computer.

How to connect iomega ego blackbelt 3.0 to mack and change the partition

Mac decided not to go with USB 3.0 so you will have to use the USB 2.0 Y cable.
Using the USB Y cable. Plug the cable into the device first, then make sure to plug both USB's in to the computer starting with the short side USB then the longer side USB second. Also try using the USB's on the back side of the computer.
Formatting with Mac OS X, version 10.5 or above. 1. Make sure you have copied any needed files to another location. 2. Select Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility 3. In the left hand column, click on the drive icon for the Iomega Hard Drive. Make sure you click on the high level icon, not the second level volume icon. 4. Select the Partition tab. 5. Change Volume Scheme from Current to 1 Partition. 6. Select the format type from the Format drop-down menu. Select Mac OS Extended (Journaled) (recommended) or Mac OS Extended. 7. Click on the Options button. 8. Select the type of partition you want to use: GUID Partition Table - for boot ability on Intel-based Macs Apple Partition Map - for boot ability on PowerPC-based Macs Master Boot Record - if you will use the drive on a PC as well as your Mac. Use this option ONLY if you selected PC-DOS as the format type. CAUTION! In most cases, the computer will fail to format the drive as a Mac OS Extended (HFS+) partition using Master Boot Record. For best results, always choose GUID Partition Table (Intel) or Apple Partition Map (PowerPC). 9. Click OK. 10. Click Apply (10.5-10.6) or Partition (10.4). The drive is ready to use when the format completes.
