Question about Cameras

1 Answer

I have a DMC-TZ5. The lens cover mechanism ("barrier") has become "sticky," and now requires an occasional very gentle tap to get open when the camera is turned on. The problem is intermittent and not predictable. The mechanism has NOT been bent or otherwise injured. I have been careful not to damage it. Any suggestions for getting it to work correctly. I've tried flushing out the mechanism with compressed air and that hasn't solved it.

Hi,

The internal mechanism is stuck and causing this problem. You can't do anything from your end. You need to take to service center to get it repaired.

Hope this helps.

Camera lens cover won't open when you turn the camera on. Says "power off then on" but still stuck

This kind of problem occurs if camera dropped on floor that broke lens mechanism OR lens mechanism got dust particles that make it stuck.
Usually lens mechanism needs to be replaced to solve the issue, however, user level try to solve the problem is to tap camera on your palm a few time gently that may release stuck lens mechanism and it start working again, if that does not help then lens assembly will be replaced.
Thanks.

Lens wont open

Dear sir,

this happens when the clearance for the lense mechanism to open and close is being insufficient due to -small bits of sand or lint that may become get trapped in the mechanism which is commom while taking photos in open dust spaces.

It is advised to take the camera to a camera repair shop and have it disassembled and cleaned,if delayed the problem gets complicated....

thank you

Aperture sticky

I'm not sure if you mean the lens barrier on the out side of the camera, the shutter that takes the picture or the high speed shutter.
If the outside barrier is sticky, it may have water soluble stuff on it like jam or syrup.
I clean this area very carefully with a Q-tip moistened with ONE drop of lens cleaner. Carefully clean by pushing the barrier back into the lens sideways, gently, and cleaning under the edge of the lens cover slightly. This is easier to do if you remove the batteries from the camera with the lens out.
Caution - you CAN jam the lens barriers. You can pop out the barriers. I suggest getting a shop to look at it.

My Panasonic DMC-TZ5 will no longer focus, especially after using zoom. It displays messages re shutting camera off and on, takes 30 seconds to turn off and sounds like a ticking clock! It is only 3 months...

If you mention "ticking clock" sounds, then most probably something like a grain of sand fell into the cogs in the zoom mechanism (been taking pictures on a beach? ;). Dirt gets into the mechanism through the gaps between the zoom barrels and the camera body. One tiny grain of sand is enough to cause the lens mechanism to jam or malfunction.
Unfortunately, this is a problem with pretty much all compact zoom cameras. Usually there is not much you can do with this. First thing I try in cases like these is gently tapping the camera to shift whatever might be blocking the mechanism. If unsuccessul, then only way I know to fix this is completely stripping the lens to clean it or swapping the lens with one taken from another camera ("donors" available on ebay ;).
If you are not keen on tinkering with your camera I would suggest selling it on ebay - TZ5 with lens mechanism issues still fetch pretty good prices.

From repairman's point of view I can say that TZ5 / TZ3 (same lens design) are much better in in terms of "resisting dirt" than various other manufacturers. They are very well made and relatively easy to dismantle and fix. This is most probably the reason why even broken ones still sell quite well on ebay.

Of course, you might get unlucky with most robust piece of kit :(

Well, hope this helps.
Good luck with your TZ5.

I dropped my camera, the lens cover is stuck open

To fix the lens is probably not your kind of work, and now you may be better to sell this camera for parts on a site like Ebay.
Not a good idea to try to fix it.

8 month old tz5 doesn't want to focus any more. Camera says to switch off and then on again, but doesn't help. Anyone help..?

Hi!
It sounds like the focus is stuck. Could be sand, dirt or something like that. I repaired a TZ5 with this problem a couple of days ago. You should contact your local Panasonic service center or other local camera service center. This is a hardware problem, not software, so I'm afraid changing setting and stuff like that won't help.

I hope this helps!

Please read carefully below procedure how to remove "Barrier Block" (what you call Lens Cover)..
Turn camera power ON so Lens will extend.
Take out battery so lens will remain extended.
First silver ring needs to be removed with help of tweezers as shown in below image..

Now you will see 2 screws at front of lens, unscrew to remove barrier block (lens cover) as shown in below image..
