Re: On a brother fax how do you set it to not go to fax...
Depending on the model of fax some have switchs on the key board and some have switch in the set up menu. There are usually 3 or 4 answer modes. One for FAX or automatic receive, MANUAL to allow you to answer the phone and many have an ANSWER MACHINE mode to allow you to hook to ansering machine...What kind of fax do you have.

Was the fax plugged into another telephone line? Maybe a power surge?
My solution would be to reconfigure the fax from scratch to learn the ring pattern.
From the Manual:
Step 1-Teach the HP Fax the ring pattern
The HP Fax will learn the ring pattern when you call it from another telephone or fax machine.
1. Be ready to call the fax machine. 2. Press Menu repeatedly until BASIC FAX displays and press OK. 3. Use LEFT ARROW - RIGHT ARROW BUTTONS to scroll through the options until DRPD Mode displays and press OK. Call this fax from another fax machine... Waiting Ring... will display. 4. Call the HP Fax.
DRPD OK will display when the pattern has been learned and the HP Fax will return to Ready mode.
Step 2-Set up distinctive ring (DRPD) answer mode
Once you have activated distinctive ring, it becomes one of the answering modes you can select by pressing the Mode/Contrast button.
Press Mode/Contrast repeatedly until DRPD Mode appears in the display.
• In Ready mode, DRPD appears in the right hand corner of the display. • Now, the HP Fax will manage calls and faxes as if it were set to AUTO mode (AUTO mode on page 28)
TIP: Distinctive ring must be set up again if you reassign your fax number or connect the machine to another telephone line. Once set up again (that is, the fax machine has learned the ring pattern and the answering mode is correctly set), you should test the fax machine by calling the fax number and another number on the same line. The machine should respond appropriately to a call placed to the fax number with fax tones, and to a normal telephone call with the expected ring pattern.
go to menu option and choose the option fax and set the parameter like auto receive or manual set the ring auto answer mode after certain ring. If it is in auto receiving mode it will receive the fax after the ring which you set.
make sure the phone wire which you insert in fax machine getting proper dial tone and getting out going calling facility.
Hope this helps. Please rate my response. Thanks. Have a good day

Some machines have a three answering modes.
1-manual-you have to pick up the fax headset and then press send when someone calls you with a fax.
2- auto-The machines answers the phone line when it rings and receives the fax automatically.
3-answer- the machines acts like a voice answering machine only.
Check your display or user settings to see that it in in AUTO RX or receive mode. .
Hope that helps.
For a phone line dedicated only to the fax machine, the process is as follows:
Press Menu/Set, 0, 1.
You will see the Fax Receive window
Use UP and DOWN arrows to change the setting to FAX ONLY
Your fax machine will now answer every incoming call. If the fax machine is sharing the phone line with a telephone, repeat the above steps and change from FAX ONLY to FAX/TEL This option will allow you to share the line with a phone only, not an answering machine. Once in FAX/TEL mode, the fax machine will still grab every incoming FAX call, and give a special ring (slightly different than a regular telephone ring) when it's a regular incoming phone call signaling you to answer the phone. I hope this helps with your problem. Best of luck! Greg
Problem lies in your Receive Mode setting. If you don't have a dedicated phone line for the fax machine, you need to set it up for either Manual where you answer every call or Fax/Tel whereby the Fax machine determines if the incoming call is a fax or phone call. Instructions per Intellifax 4100 Manual.
Select a Receive Mode
Choose the mode that best suits your needs by pressing the Mode button
repeatedly until the FAX and FAX/TEL lights show the setting you want to use.
You must answer every call yourself.
The Brother machine must be started manually
to receive faxes.
For use with a dedicated fax line.
Every call is answered as a fax.
For receiving fax and voice calls on one line.
The FAX answers every call and receives a fax or
double rings for you to pick up a voice call.
For use with an answering device.
The TAD answers every call and stores voice messages.
Fax messages are printed.
Set your machine to MANUAL, this will allow you to answer every call yourself, then if it is a fax, the machine will take over. Sounds like you have it in fax/tel mode now, which allows for the fax machine to answer every call then if not a fax, double rings to you.
Not familar with MNL, does sound like you have the receive mode set to manual. set to auto anser or answer machine. In manual mode the phone will ring until you tell the fax to receive. In auto mode after so may ring which you set, the fax will pick up...
Voicemail or telephone answering device (TAD). There is a BIG difference. Voicemail is product of your telephone service provider. If you have voicemail, most providers have a solution to this that you must arrange through them. If you have an answering machine, you can set your Brother to TAD mode. In TAD mode, if your answering machine picks up, (you must set your answering machine to answer in less rings than your fax), your fax will "eavesdrop" to listen for the fax tones from the sending machine. If it hears these tones, it will disconnect your answering machine and accept the incoming fax. If it does not hear the tones, it allows the answering machine to record the incoming message.
If you are home.
If you answer the call and hear a tone every 2.5 to 3 seconds, that signals an incoming fax. Simply touch *51 on the keypad of the phone you picked up on. You will hear some shrill tones. That is your fax machine attempting to receive the incoming fax. Hang up the phone you are on and it will receive the fax.
In any case, make sure that the receive mode is NOT set to AUTO. Set the receive mode to TAD or MANUAL.
