Either your fan is dirty or your fan is malfunctioning. If you have a warranty then call Dell to replace the fan (they will run some test first), or if you know how to replace the fan i would suggest that first.

Dell usually comes with a Diagnostic Disk that you can boot from to troubleshoot, if you do not have the disk then the built in Diagnostic Utility can help you. This will also help tell you if there is anything else wrong with the machine, the test takes long so be patient.

To get to the Diagnostics Utility follow these steps:

1. Reboot the computer and press "F12" and you will be taken to a "Boot Menu".
2. Select the Diagnostic Utility (might have a different name)
3. Walk through he steps to test your computer. This Utility will test everything that's why the disk is better. The disk will allow you to choose which test to run.

If you do not have the built in Diagnostic Utility and do not have the disk then visit the Dell website, choose support and type in your Service Tag number. Then download the utility, this site can also determine if you still have a warranty on the machine (but your GX520 is quite old and might be out of warranty)

Whining fan dell E520 computer

Replace the fan as soon as possible. If the noise suddenly stops, DON'T assume the problem corrected itself. More likely, the fan completely froze and stopped spinning entirely and you're at risk of overheating something inside. Generally, there are usually 3 fans in a desktop computer (cpu/heatsink, case, and power supply) and sometimes a 4th fan if the computer has a separate graphics card. Laptops usually only have one fan.

Fan makes noise on my Dell Inspiron One 19

Usually there is a fan on the CPU heatsink and a fan in the power supply.
Open the case and turn on the computer and use a small timber stick and poke it into the CPU fan to stop it spinning and if the noise stops then this fan needs replacing.
If it is OK the the fan in the power supply is faulty. I recommend you replace the power supply because there are dangerous voltages inside this power supply.

What's your problem?tower fan is always running off and on

Your computer's Processor/CPU fan is set to run faster when it is hot and slower when it is cool. That is why it get's quiet and loud. A clean may reduce the noise, by removing the dust from the computer system the fans will be able to operate more efficiently and effectively meaning that they won't have to spin as fast.

Install fans in your chassis to provide your computer system with freash air, an exhaust fan is also an idea to push warm air out of the system. Generally the larger the fan the quieter it will be, as a large fan can spin at a slower rate to provide the same airflow of a smaller unit.

Remember that it is that fan over the CPU heatsink that is keeping your computer alive. Overtime they can wear, replacing the fan is an option.

Take care!

For our Dell Optiplex GX 520 Desktop, Very loud noise is coming from fan, we tried to change the fan and even updated bios, but still the problem continues.

Hi, I am Steve, lets get you some help
When you say you tried to change the fan I am guessing you did not manage to.
The computer has very few moving parts inside it so not much that can cause noise.
You have 2 real options
  • It is coming from the speakers/sound jack and something is wrong with the sound card. Cheek this by unplugging the speakers.
  • The fan is is the other option - firstly clean the fan and the air vents to see if that helps - if not replace the fan assembly.

Hope this helps.

Fan sounds like it taking off when downloading and surfing alot of pages and doing maintance its a dell otiplex gx280

Open your machine while its running and check the power supply fan. The CPU fan will speed up to try and make up for the power supply fan that is not running. Both fans are temp controlled so if one is not working the computer will overheat and cause the other fan to speed much faster than it should run. You need to check it quick because overheating will damage the motherboard, hard drive and cpu.

Dell Demension runs great but loud fan noise that takes a long time to shut down. What going wrong?

I had a similar problem with excessive fan noise on my Dell Dimension 5150. The solution was to replace the worn heat sync compound that was between the cpu and the heat sync itself. (£0.99 ebay)

Loud Dell desktop

Any fan that is making noise you would need to replace. There is also never a need to use alcohol to clean a fan. Some computer air or a light wipe down will do just fine.
If you have any other questions let me know.
