Question about Seagate Expansion 1.5 TB USB 2.0 Portable External STAX1500100 Black Hard Drive

2 Answers

I have an external Seagate Freeagent 1.5TB drive, purchased at Costco roughly 2 yrs. ago. My two yr old knocked it about 10 inches onto a carpeted floor (which didn't seem like a big fall) but now it will not power up. It also has a soft repetitive hum for about 5 minutes while the drive tries to spin up. It sounds like my only hope for getting the data out is to send it in to a recovery company with a cost of $700-$1200, any suggestions? I am devasated because it has all of our family pictures & videos and I had no backup.

More you try to use, you'll have less chance to recover the data. Try consult with seagate service center to fix the drive first before send it to data recovery company.

I burned out my external hard drives PCB board and I am unable to find a new one

The Printed Circuit Board ON THE Harddrive inside the Seagate FreeAgent, or the small PCB inside the Seagate FreeAgent's external enclosure? (Case)

If you are referring to the small PCB that the Harddrive connects to, and has the USB cable coming from it, just buy an external enclosure, and install the Harddrive into it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0HZ-wTdscgc

If your Seagate is like the one in the link above, it has a laptop size Harddrive in it, and it is a SATA unit.

2.5 inches across in width. (2 and a half inches)

This is an example of a 2.5 SATA external enclosure,

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3195233&CatId=2783

IF you are referring to the PCB on the Harddrive itself, good luck.

One method would be to buy another harddrive like the one in the Seagate FreeAgent, and use it's PCB so that you can retrieve your information.

Then reinstall the PCB on the new harddrive.

Knocked over Seagate 500GB FA Pro Makes Beep Noise/Can't Connect

it sounds like the disc (inside the hard drive casing) has become jammed or what is known as "stickation". the best way to unstick the disc is usually another sharp blow. the best way to do this is to remove the drive from the external casing and, while holding it by one side, strike the other side downward onto a hard surface like a wood desk. do not strike it on metal or cement as you may cause more damage. make sure the surface is softer than the drive casing. it sounds extreme but it has worked for me on several occasions.

Hard Drive Buzzing and Wont work (Seagate External Freeagent 1TB)

You are in trouble!
The buzzing sound is the heads trying to realign themselves at the beginning of the platter.
You could try putting it on a side and hope gravity helps.
But i'm afraid its broke beyond repair.

I bought this Seagate Freeagent external hard drive less than a year ago and the other day when I plugged it in I came to the cold realization that it had overheated. There is a known problem with the...

Most of these external hard drives are just regular old 3.5" or 2.5" hard drives in some sexy looking enclosure. Hopefully just the power supply to the drive overheated and did not do any damage to your data.

Disconnect the unit from the mains (duh!) and carefully disassemble the unit until you can get at the drive itself. Disconnect the drive, and see if it is an EIDE or SATA drive. Again, the drive itself is going to look a lot like one your've seen inside your computer because in 99% of cases it is the same thing.

Purchase another external enclosure for the proper type of interface (SATA or EIDE), or , if there is room in the PC itself, actually install the drive in your PC as an auxiliary drive.

Data retrieved.

Voila!

Turn off your computer and then plug in the FreeAgent external drive. Then try turning your computer on, it should read.  If it doesn't I would go to the Seagate website for troubleshooting.

My external hard drive is unreadable

Does you drive make any sounds like these? If yes you have a mechanical problem and you should get a specialist to work on it. If not - try to remove the drive from USB casing and connect it directly to your PC or put into another USB enclosure. This should help if the problem is with the enclosure itself and not with the drive.

Make freeagent deskot 250GB master hard drive

1) I greatly suggest against making ANY external HD your primary disk.

2) Not many computers support this.

3) The most likely method would involve reisntalling your OS (Windows/OS X) onto the drive.

4) I just noticed this thread is from three months ago... :P
