Are you using alkaline batteries? If so, alkaline batteries just don't have the power for more than a few pics in today's digital camera. Some brands may have reached their shelf-life in the store, and may have problems just powering startup of the camera right out of the package.

Digital cameras for the most part should only be used with rechargeable NiMH batteries. These days many retailers sell these for around $7 for a package of four (about $15-19 for the batteries with charger). Keep in mind they'll save you big bucks in the long run over alkalines, AND they'll last for at least 100 pictures per charge (and probably many, many more). You'll be very pleased with their performance, and may slap yourself for not buying them sooner. When at the store, look on the package for a power rating of at least 2500 mah.

Believe it or not I've acquired several cameras from ebay over the past year at ridiculously low prices (one was an orange/gold A400). Each supposedly "would not start" according to their previous owners. Aboslutely nothing was wrong with them that NiMH batteries did not correct.

IT KEEPS TELLING ME TO CHANGE THE BATTERIES (EVEN WHEN THEY'RE NEW BATTERIES) AND SHUTS DOWN COMPLETELY.

Couldn't find a firmware upgrade for my Canon PowerShot A720. Tried putting a piece of rubber under the spring on the lid to make it tighter and it helped because I can take more pictures before I get the dead battery message (even thought they aren't dead). I bought the Duracell that you can check the charge on because I'm sure I've wasted dozens of batteries by now.

Battery power?

Hi,

Are you using the same type of batteries as the ones you used when the camera actually worked in the past?

Keep getting change battery message and camera turns off.

Hi,

I had this on mine. If you pen the battery compartment door, you will see a piece of plastic labelled "CR1220". You can pull this out and replace the little CR1220 battery that it holds. That ought to solve your problem.

New batteries are not accepted

put batteries in very carefully - not bouncing them in. If you get the 'change the batteries message' then open the battery cover turn the camera a little gently to reposition the batteries and hopefully it should go away. Test your charger too ... is it charging? is it the same thing with non-rechargeable batteries?remember Batteries don't work well when cold this could cause the camera to shutdown. It might also be that the auto shut down setting is too short unless it is shutting down while you are actually shooting.make sure you are using the correct battery type and match.clean the contacts in the battery compactment.hope this helps

Change the batteries message even with new NIMH RShack batteries

The solution is to change the small 'date/time' battery. You can have the regular batteries as charged as you like, it won't make any difference. The tiny date/time battery is in the same compartment as the regular batteries, on the opposite side of the hinge. Extract it with a fingernail, it is situated on the left hand wall of the battery compartment (when the camera is inverted and the compartment open).

Cannon A590 "Change the batteries" after replacing new batteries

Off-the-shelf NiMH rechargeable batteries, and the special lithium nonrechargeablebatteries sold as esepcially good for camera use, don't have enough voltage output for this camera. Try using regular alkaline batteries or the rechargeables sold by the manufacturer.

Canon A95 "Change Batteries" problem!

I have this problem as well. I thought it was a problem with my NiMH batteries. So, I bought a volt meter to make sure the batteries worked. I have 8 AA NiMH batteries. I charged them all up and tested them with the volt meter. They were all good to go. However, no matter what I put in the camera one of two things happens:
1. I get the "change batteries" message.
2. I don't get the message, but the next time I check the camera (a few days later), one of them is totally drained.
Something is very wrong and I plan on contacting Canon.
