Now after changing the SR1420NX hard drive back to the orginal 80HD I have some over heating problem I think it may be the CPU fan or maybe i should take the heat sink off and put some fresh Thermal paste on the processor then reinstall the heat sink and fan. What do you think of this idea.

So far it is working okay thank you for your help The power supply fan was good to and i cleaned that unit out.

The BIOS has a max. hard drive size limitation. Check the manual for the maximum size the motherboard can support.
If the maximum size hard disk it can support then you can add a second hard drive in the computer as a SLAVE hard drive to double your disk space capacity.

The BIOS does not show what the maximum size hard disk it can support. It only can detect a hard disk up to the max/ hard disk it can support.
To get into the BIOS have a close look at the screen when you boot up, it will display briefly the Function key you need to press as soon as you boot up the computer.

    Standard configuration 1.0 x 80.0 GB - Standard - ATA-100 - 7200.0 rpm

According to the specification it can support up to 160Gb hard disk.

Compaq's SR1420NX offers a versatile, strong base for your home computing needs. Focusing on affordability, the SR1420NX has room to grow with an available expansion slot, 2 available PCI slots, 5 USB ports for connecting peripherals, and the ability to add up to 2 GB of RAM. This desktop comes with an 80 GB hard drive, 512 MB of installed RAM, 2.93 GHz Intel Celeron processor, dual-layer DVD-/ RW drive (which also burns CDs), and a multi-format memory card reader. For a step up in price, the SR1430NX offers a Pentium 4 processor, 160 GB hard drive, and an extra CD-ROM drive.

Yes this would be a good thing to do, BUT you should check the CPU fan to see if it works properly and spins freely and remove the dust from the heat sink and fan assembly.

Also check the fan in the power supply.
You can also add another fan in the desktop case for additional cooling.

Geekman... I went to Radio Shack and bought the Thermal Paste it was $6.49 not to bad. So I took all the old paste off with Alcohol pads made sure the processer and heat sink was clean and applied the amount that was on the instructions.

I also checked to see if the CPU fan was good it was I notice when i removed the fan it had a crud of dust on the heat sink I guess i did not see it with the fan on it. The power supply fan was dirty so i used a q-tip and cleaned it off. So far i do not smell that electronic smell I also put the Desktop on top of the desk to have it get more air. Being in the desk enclosure did not help to much even though it had some open spaces.

I assume that your computer is working fine now that the dust has been removed. Hope my solutions has fixed your problems.

Maximum hard drive

If you run Windows XP or newer, Linux, Ubuntu or Mac then you are not restricted to size. The larger the hard drive the longer it takes for windows to check all of your files as it boots up.

Just replace the fan. They are a standard commodity and not hard to change. Get a good one this time. You get what you pay for.

You should be able to put in almost any laptop SATA hard drive in the machine. Depending on your OS, you may have to partition the drive in order to make best use of the larger types.

The maximum hard drive you can install depends upon the BIOS. You MAY BE able to install a larger hard drive if the BIOS upgrade will allow it. I suggest you go to the Gigagyte WEB site to check on this possibility.

I have a HP Compaq d530 SFF with a 40 G hard drive. I want to upgrade to a hard drive of at least 80 G. Am I able to do this? Like to know also how much more RAM can I add I have 1.5 GBs now..

You can get a maximum of 4GB of ram.
Yes you can also upgrade your drive, probably to a lot larger than 80.

The following is a link to the manual that you can download, in PDF format, that has information on upgrading/adding both memory and hard disks for the HP d530 SFF. It has both diagrams and instructions.

http://bizsupport1.austin.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c00059123/c00059123.pdf

Go to the "Hardware Upgrades" section.

Why can't I copy larger files than 4 maybe 5GB to my passport WD? Is there a quick way how I can change this?

Your disk is formatted using FAT32 file system. FAT32 has a maximum single file size of 4GB. Reformat your drive using NTFS file system to enable file saving larger than 4GB.

To reformat the drive:
-insert external drive
- open "My Computer", point your mouse over the drive letter of your external drive, right-click and select "Format". Select NTFS from drop-down menu under "File System".
-click "Start" button

Please note that all data will be deleted so please backup your files before formatting the drive.

Whats the largest replaement HD I can put in my Presario

The HD capacity is defined by the bios software in the computer, if HP/Compaq tells you that 80Gb is the maximum capacity, then I think you should believe them, after all they should be the first one interested in selling more high price products, go for the 80Gb is .
