How do you set up an external hard drive?

Turn your computer on and plug the external hard drive into the computer.

Open "Computer Management" by clicking "Start," "Control Panel," "System and Security," "Administrative Tools" and "Computer Management."

Click "Disk Management" in the left pane under "Storage."

Locate your external drive from the list of hard drives connected or installed on your computer.

Right-click the drive and select "Format."

Select a file format from the drop-down menu. Choose "NTFS" if you will be using the external hard drive with a computer that uses Windows 7, Windows Vista or Windows XP.

If you will be using the hard drive with an older version of Windows, select "FAT32."

This is a much less common format.

Click "OK" twice and your external drive is formatted. Once the drive is formatted, it is properly set up to be used with your computer.

hope this helps

I have external hard disk 500g seagate. it dosen't open and disapper not accessible (error performing inpage operation)" message. what do i? it's very important for me.

Hi ahmad1353,

You might be experiencing some problem with the hard drive itself so here's what you can try;

Open command prompt(if your using Windows): Click start -> Run(if your using Windows 7 just type CMD on the start search) type CMD and press Enter.

On the Command Prompt(black screen with a blinking cursor) type the following command;

chkdsk [drive:] /F - wherein [drive] is the drive letter for you Seagate external hard drive(to check just double clieck MyComputer(Computer for Windows 7) and look for the drive letter. This should scan the external hard drive for any problems and hopefully provide a fix for you to be able to access your files.
