You do know you can increase your integrated video's memory in the bios. Up to 1GB. (Yes, I know you currently only have 1GB of system memory) but you can kick it up to 128Mb & Vista should still run.
Your 1GB system memory is shared with the on-board video card.
I'd like you to clean out the PCI-E slot with some cotton swabs & house hold Alcohol. (do not over soak the swabs). Clean the pny's copper contacts as well. Get a really strong flash light & look into the PCI-E slot & look for dust, dirt & check the copper connectors are not bent or twisted. Re-install the PCI-E card & set the bios back to PCI-E. Try again. Even if the system reverts to weird, install the 8400's software & driver. Re-start the system. See if the system runs normal. Also would not hurt to check for Window's updates. After all that, if system does not function normally I suspect there is something wrong with the 8400 card.
Good luck & let me know if this has helped.
Have a great day.

Hi,
Supports AMD Socket 754 Athlon 64/ Sempron processors, here is a list of processors supported by the motherboard >>>>
http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/mb-ASUS/K8V-MX.html
As for the graphics, the board supports PCI Express graphics cards, its up to you which card to buy, you can either purchase Nvidia Geforce 9 series or ATI Radeon HD series.
Regards.

The Asus K8V-VM motherboard has an intergrated audio chip on the motherboard, Realtek ALC660. You need to enable it in the bios. If you do not have you're manual down load it from Asus; http://www.asus.com/Search.aspx?SearchKey=K8V-VM You'll also need Adobe reader installed to view the manual. Enter the bios menu. Open Advanced. See the top of page
2-21 in the manual. Set, High definition Audio to [Auto] Save and exit the bios. Also check out page 1-19. You can install the driver software from the Asus CD or download it from the Asus link provided above.
Realtek Audio Driver V5.10.0.5211 for Windows 2000/XP/XP 64bit. (WHQL)

Graphics drivers
As this motherboard was manufactured way before Windows 7 was released there may not be compatible Windows 7 VGA drivers for it.
If you go here there is a list of drivers or this board but none of them support Windows 7.
Try downloading the ASUS K8V VM Video driver for Windows XP, it may work.
