Portable dvd player, model #MDP-1820, we put a disc in and it just keeps spinning and says loading at the top left corner of the screen, we've tried other discs and have the same problem.

The dvd player is about 4 years old so I don't think the manufacturer will replace the lens. What can I do to fix the problem? It was working fine and then the next day the problem started.

  • pattie470 Aug 04, 2008

I tried it. There is a red light on while the disc is spinning. It is not moving back and forth. When I take the disc out I can manually move the lens and it always returns to its home position. It also knows when there is no disc in. Let me try somegthing else.

  • pattie470 Aug 04, 2008

I tried to take the casing off but one of the screws is stripped and I can't get it out. What now?

  • pattie470 Aug 04, 2008

  • pattie470 Aug 04, 2008

the disc holder is fine. Springs are intact. Try again.

  • pattie470 Aug 04, 2008

When the disc starts to turn, the player makes two beeps.

  • pattie470 Aug 04, 2008

I am not getting any more ideas for my problem. What else can I do? The last 4 emails have been the same suggestion.

Try this little trick, get a bit of cotton and a bit of window cleaner or disinfectant and mist the cotton with it and then clean the laser from the dvd. You may also try rubbing alcohol.

You probably won't be real happy with this answer, but I believe it really is the answer!

The company is out of business, and as reflected on the CPSC's web site, in 2005 there was a recall of battery packs relative to the model just before this one. Their only resolution for those consumers affected by the recall is to dispose of the battery safely. Further, consistent consumer reviews indicate that a four year life on this company's product was probably close to a true miracle. Most report anywhere from a month to a year...

Given the decline in cost concurrent with quality increases, you're likely to be better off to purchase a new unit. Check the black spindle that holds the disk it may be cracked or broken or the little spring tabs are broken. If this is the problem when the disk spins it lifts up and the head doesn't read the disk

Is the CD still running ? if not you may want to check on the motor connection in the device. just remove the casing to expose the boards and other components in it.

if the CD IS running, check if the lens is moving up and down or traveling through its railing, there is a possibility that the Lens assembly has removed from the railing where it is traveling.

better if you will be able to open the unit up to have a good look inside for loose parts and broken parts, for cleaning too.

hope this helps.

well apparently the plastic may have lost its threading, i suggest that you dont go further because if you try to open it with force and case may give up, put the screws back in, be careful not to put too much pressure to it.

if the lens is not moving there it is stuck, possible that the plastic gears are jammed or moved from their original location, if it is visible from the top, try to check if you will be able to clean or locate the faulty gear. if it is possible. i sure hope you don't hear a loose part if you shake the player, it could be the part that is hindering the lens to operate.

If you open the case, with the disc spinning, take the disc out, if you see the lens moving back or forth, then the lens may be dirty, defective or disconnected.

If the lens does not move back or forth, (try a couple of times) then your motor or mechanism that moves the lens is defective!

Keep in mind, short of a loose connection, your parts replacement will cost more than the price of a new one, as they have declined in price drastically over the last 4 years!

  • Brian Berndt

I would try to force the head back into position, then check for obvious problems, then refer to me previous post about the cost of parts!

We truly wish you the best of luck with this problem.

I would suggest to use a lens cleaner if you have and see if that helps. If it does not, the laser assembly is defective and will need to be replace; in which case it could not be economical to repair.

There's probably a problem with the lens of this player if it wont even play a single disc better have it replace from the manufacturer if its new.

Good luck.......

You can use a lens cleaner for this one and hopefully that will fix your concern if the problem is you only have a dirty lens...

Ok because this may really be a bad lens already and need a replacement...

No disc error

With the power turned off, open the DVD Player, and then open the top where you load the DVD into the player. Locate the laser lens and notice that the laser is attached to a transport assembly that moves the laser diagonally outward in a slot. 1. Slide this assembly outward to the end of its track. 2. Slide the assembly back inward to the closest inward position. 3. Repeat the process of sliding the assembly outward and then back inward.4. Put in a music CD and let it play all the way through. This helps to calibrate the laser head assembly movement. When the music CD is finished playing. 5. Put in a DVD, and you should have a working unit again This is a factory solution from Mintek that was given to a customer who ask for help with the forever loading disc problems. This solution may work on other models of portable DVD players. Most portable DVD players use this type of transport mechanism. Try this solution it might work for you. I hope this information helps you with your problem.
