Question about PC Desktops

I recently bought a Maxtor 250 Gb One Touch 4 hard drive and lost the directions. I have a repair disc, but it has not instructions. There are two USB leads, red and black which completely confuses me. I am in the generation where peers cheer when you turn it on successfully! Please help me install it from square one. **** Howland ****.howland@gmail.com

My mom bought a similar device, the Red lead is the primary on hers the black lead is a secondary connection so it looks something like this:

_________=
------{=

where the = are the usb connectors

the first connection (red in my moms case is the primary it does some power and all data
the black connection (secondary) is to give more power if the usb port cannot provide enough power through 1 usb connector to fully power the device

The maxtor one touch hardrives generally have a 3 year warranty on them. If you have the orginal invoice for the same, I would suggest you to call maxtor and they can help you out on the same. The support information is available on the site below

Recently bought a Maxtor portable 250 GB HDD, need to format it to FAT32 so that my Playstation 3 can recognise it, but Vista will not allow it, can only format it to NTFS and exFAT. How can i format the...

You must be logged on as an administrator to perform these steps. Before you begin, note that the FAT32 file system has size limitations. In this version of Windows, you cannot create a FAT32 partition greater than 32 gigabytes (GB). In addition, you cannot store a file larger than 4 GB on a FAT32 partition. For more information, see Comparing NTFS and FAT file systems.
blank.gif Converting a hard disk partition or volume from NTFS to FAT32 requires that you reformat the partition, which will destroy any data on it. Be sure to back up any data you want to keep before you begin.

Hi there, I think it may be to do with the format of the harddrive - see if you used the Maxtor in a Windows XP environment it would have been formatted to suit that OS.

Is the Harddrive formatted to NTFS?

Purchased Maxtor ONE TOUCH III. when I had XP. Now that I have Vista, mAXTOR DOESN'T RECOGNIZE IT. iS THERE AN UP-DATE? nEED HELP. Thanks Marty xmartico@san.rr.com

Hey xmartico,

If your recent update from Windows XP to Windows Vista has been the only major change to your computer system since you could access your Maxtor One Touch III last, you may simply need to reinstall the Maxtor software to resolve the problem.

Information provided by the manufacturer has suggested that if no password was ever set, the hard drive should work with Vista immediately with no additional work required. If you had chosen a password however, you may need to reinstall the software and reboot every time you disconnect/shut down the external drive, or disable your user account control (UAC). Please keep in mind though that disabling UAC is strongly discouraged, as it may open your computer to attacks by various malware programs including viruses and spyware.

If you're still not quite sure how to proceed, I would strongly recommend contacting Maxtor directly for further assistance.

Hope this helps you out.

Sincerely,
Aaron
