Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I have a compaq desktop whose power supply blew and i was forced to replace it with another one. After replacing it i switched on my pc of which it did but the monitor remained black(sleep mode). The video card is onboard so i blew away some dust around it but did not use a blower. After that the monitor picked the signal and before it finished booting it gave the message "hv frequency over range" and went off. After a day i tried it and it worked for about 15min and the same problem reoccured.I gave it a break and this time after 2days i tried it on and it has been working properly for a week. When i turned it on expecting it would continue working properly, it gave a black screen.I tried it later and it gives the message above immediately after booting and then successive trials give a black screen. Please help.Is it the video card that is faulty? Now that its on board, how do i replace it?Or are there any settings i need to configure to rectify this without necessarily having to replace it?Thank you in advance.

It sounds like your video card is set to produce a resolution / refresh rate beyond what your monitor is capable of reproducing. Try booting into safe mode - assuming you are running windows- by holding / tapping F8 while your turning on your computer. if you get something on your screen in safe mode you know your settings are incorrect or you have an improperly installed video card driver. reinstall the drivers while in safe mode and reboot.

Check that you hooked up all the power supply connections. Try a new motherboard battery as the old one may be dead and the bios is not working. You are evidently not getting a post beep signaling that the cpu, ram, video are good.

Have my hp desktop whose red light at fornt just lights continously (does not blink) then fun is running, the power supply is on but it does not start

The color of the lights are different on a CASE by case basis. I wouldn't get overly fixated on the lights. If your getting just some lights on and maybe some of the fans then I would start by replacing the power supply. Easy to do just google or youtube "install PSU" and you will have lots of videos on it. All the connectors are keyed (they only fiit one way) and only on the right devices. Comment back if you need more information or help.

My Presario SR1720NX has a blinking green light on the back near the power supply when plugged in but no power. Already replaced power supply - is my system board a goner?

Would check the switch at the front of the pc.Have had several issues with that particular switch getting pushed out on compaqs just enough to allow them not to turn on.Would also verify that all powers supply plugs are pushed in all the way.

Having trouble w/ on / off switch ... have already replaced power supply ... computer turns on and off at will ... but not necessarily when you want it to ... replacement part number for...

"computer turns on and off at will"
May be a wattage issue considering that you replaced the power supply. The power supply may no be providing enough power to the Compaq Presario 6370US, you must have at least a 400 Watt Power Supply to help the computer run. Also, check to see if all your internal fans are working, i can also an overheating issue.

Cannot boot or switch on

The power supply is faulty and needs to be replaced, undo the screws holding the top cover on, pull the cover up and away from the from the front, the power supply will be at the back on the right, there are four screws holding the power supply in place, they are at the back of the computer case, undo these and the power supply should come out, make a note of where the power connectors go before removing, take the power supply to your local pc store, as most power supplies are standered the compaq power supplies maybe slightly smaller in size, so your local store may have a replacement or you may have to order one straight from compaq. hope this helps. cheers.

Switching power option blew a fuse!!!??

You can find power supplies online (newegg or tigerdirect) for less than $40, sometimes with free shipping. I would guess that is the problem. Hopefully the power supply went out and it didn't ruin the motherboard.

Wont start up

my wife has a presario that had a similar problem - it would boot up, then immediately shut down. I took off the side plate and blew off some of the dust inside. that worked for a couple of days then the symptoms returned. I took it apart again but this time I removed the cpu fan and the cpu heat sink. I cleaned all the **** off the fan and the heat sink and replaced it. this time it stayed on. I checked out the power supply. compaq installed a very cheap power supply - only 250 watts. a replacement power supply for the same machine but with an output of 300 watts is available. as soon as I can scrape up the change, I'm gonna change the PS

Red light flashing on power button

Sounds like the hard drive has had a failure, you need to get a replacement one, and reinstall it, along with the opperating system, and any other programs that were on the old one.
