The black stuff is called "Scrud".
It builds up over time from a combination of washing detergent and fabric softener.

Reach your hand down the middle of the agitator (middle pole) after removing the cap. There is a plastic wing nut that you can undo with your hand. The agitator can then be lifted out.

The other easy solution is dumping half a box of epsom salts in there (usually in the bath/ medical isle of the supermarket), run the machine empty, on HOT, Full load so that it fills all the way. Usually this cleans most of it out.

A more regular empty hot wash will prevent build up in the future.

It leaves holes and looks like black rubber on it

the black rubber is most likely fabric softener build up. The hose are the marks of the bowl perforations. Once this black 'stuff' builds up from the over use of fabric softener it could mean the end of the machine. The way to try and get rid of it is to wash an empty load in hot water with Epsom salts. This will loosen the black grease but be careful as some loads further on, large amounts could release and mark you clothes. If the bowls can be removed from the machine they could be scrubbed clean but this is a costly exercise. Tip from now on do not ever use fabric softener. end of story. Use low sudsing soap in your washer whether it be a top or front loader. good luck

2002 Kenmore front load washer 42042 is leaving large black smudges 3-4 square inches each and streaks, and dot patterned stuff of the same on my clothes. This unit is stacked . Is it repairable for...

Two possibilities come to mind. Too much fabric softener, or
the black rubber door seal. Try rubbing the seal with a paper
towel to see it it smudges. Try cleaning with bleach or alcohol,
then rinse it thoroughly with water.

Apparently the residue is fatty buildup from fabric softener. Try filling it up with the warmest water possible and add some bicarb to dissolve it, then rinse a few times to get it out of the machine completely. Then use vinegar instead of softener for most washes, or dilute fabric softener with water 1:4 and occasionally rinse with bicarb. This works for me.

Remove and replace fabric softener dispenser on kenmore model 20952992

I just did it. All you do is pull up on the blue part -- put the fingers of both hands under the rim and pull. It isn't screwed or bolted on. If there's a lot of gunk built up, it's all the harder to pull up. Be prepared for some yucky stuff. It would be nice if that whole section would come out, since you have to clean the area below with Q-tips.

Black stuff in washing machine

You need to clean the filter out (look in your machine - it's on the side of the tub) then run a wash with a cup of vinegar in it (or on soak with napisan or something like that in it). It's just gunk build up.
