What modem? there should be an admin option in you router that will let you do this. if htis is a modem not a router then its locked by your isp.

Which numbers on the sticker on the back of the modem are the password/passphrase and which numbers are the PIN

Even though it's an Arris, try this:
1. Open a browser window.
2. Type in the IP address for the modem 192.168.0.1.
3. Type in the default Username; admin.
4. Type in the default Password; motorola.

If that doesn't work, try "root" for the username and "motorola" for the password and reset it to factory settings. Then start again with the steps above and change the username and password to whatever you choose. Good luck!

I have a SBG6580. I am trying to enter the security key but cannot find it on the back of the router...please help

I shall have to assume you in a 'Factory Reset' situation, where you have not signed into the modem, and changed username/password defaults, (new unit, fresh out of the box).
Do not connect to the cable company yet. First, secure the modem.....
From the User Manual, page 9..... You do have a User Manual?
1. Open a browser window, after connecting your computer.

Use a 'wired' connection. Never change security settings, using Wi-Fi connection.....

2. Type in the IP address for the modem 192.168.0.1 in the URL address. That should take you to the modem's password change window.
3. Type in the default Username: admin.
4. Type in the default Password: motorola.
5. Type in your new username in the Password Change Username field.
6. Type in your new password in the New Password field.
7. Re-enter your new password
8. Re-type your new username in the Current Username Password field.
9. Click Apply.
10. Connect the modem to the cable company. You should shortly be able to go online, after the modem has synchronized to the cable company. That usually takes about a minute.

Your question asks for the 'security key'. That generally refers to the Wi-Fi settings. If that is the case, go to the 192.168.0.1 address, sign-in, and click on Wireless. Follow the obvious directions.... Or, post here again....

How do I change the "Pass code" on my wireless Motorola surfboard modem ???

If you mean the wireless pass code or Passphrase you need to log onto your modems web page which normally sits at IP address: 192.168.100.1. In the wireless section there is the pass code update field.

I want to change the username and password for afaq shamel modem. do i have to restart the modem after changing username and password. moreover, do i have to keep the modem connected with my laptop while...

You should not have to restart your modem after changing the password. Once you change that password you might be promt to enter your new password in to establish an internet connection following the password change. The preferred method to to access your modem is through your computer with the modems IP address.By default most of the afaq shamels passwords are as follows:
Default IP: 192.168.1.1
Username: Afaq_shamel
Password: stccpe_2007

Type in that IP address in any internet browser (Fire Fox, IE, etc) You should be prompt to enter in a user name and password. If the one mentioned above does not work try:
Username: admin
Password: password

I hope that this helps you along the way. let me know if there is anything else I can do to assist you.
Thank you

Open a web browser (e.g. Internet Explorer, Firefox or Opera). Enter the IP address of your router in the address bar of the browser and press enter. The IP address of your router is by default 192.168.1.1

You see a box asking for your username and password.
By default the username and password for your D-link DSL-502T router are both admin
