I have reformated my Dell dimension 8400 and now it doesnt see "other devices" in the device manager. I am running xp pro but bought it with xp home and even tried installing that with same problem. Is there a program I can run to see if the mother board is ok? Thanks in advance for any help. Service tag: 5mm6z61

If your missing devices are built into the motherboard (like sound, Ethernet etc.) then you need you install the setup CD that came with your computer and install the devices. This CD may also be referred to as a utility or driver CD. If you don't have this CD you will have to go to the support section of the manufacturer's website and either order a replacement CD or download the drivers for your MB.
If you missing devices are on plug-in cards or printers/scaners/ cemeras etc. that you installed after you first setup your computer then you need to install the driver CD for each missing device and run the setup program that is on the CD. If you don't have these CD's you will have to go to each manufacturer's website and either order the CD or download the drivers for the model number of the device.

Commonly when a motherboard fails, you won't have neither video or audio, simply your computer won't start anything.
Since Windows XP starts, you could install the latest motherboard drivers as the first step, as a second step you could update the BIOS to the latest version, all this software can be downloaded from Dell website.

Windows does not include the drivers for your specific computer
you need to install them manually
go to support.dell.com
enter your service tag
download and install drivers
you will need another computer and usb drive to copy download and copy drivers to Dell 8400

I can not get any sound coming from my hp dimension 8400. How do I check the drivers/software is operating properly?

This the route for winXP, other versions should be fairly similar.

RMB click "My Computer"
LMB Click "Manage"
LMB Click "Device Manager"

You should see a list of devices, scroll down those, any which have a red X on have been disabled any with a yellow ? have a driver issue.

My computer just stop to producing sound from speakers even the welcoming window xp sound,

Hi,

The audio driver might have been corrupted. You just need to download the appropriate audio driver for your motherboard. Go to the Device Manager and install all missing drivers for "Unknown Devices". Either connect to the internet or use the driver disc which came with your motherboard.

For those who doesn't know how to access Device Manager, please follow the steps below.

For Windows XP:
Start -> Run -> Type devmgmt.msc (in the box) -> Right click Unknown device -> Properties -> Driver tab -> Update driver

For Windows Vista and Windows 7
Start -> Type devmgmt.msc (in the start search box) -> Right click Unknown device -> Properties -> Driver tab -> Update driver

Hope this helps.

I have a Dell Dimension 8400. The hard drive crashed so I went to the Dell website, entered my System Service Tag #, bought the reccomended "compatible" hard drive which is WD 1600AAJS 160 GB...

It will be easier if you will have it checked with any computer technician. They will normally charge a very minimal fee for this very common kind of problem.

Be sure to be there when he checked your computer, so he can also teach you about it.
