Are you inserting the batteries with the totally flat side up and button side down?
And did you remember to put the clear cmos jumper back where it was, because if not, not only may you have damaged the unit, but that is the only explanation I can see for draining the battery like that.
The PC should never be powered on while the cmos jumper is in the clear position.

Hi.

The most probable reason you are getting the bad checksum error is you have to set the date and time because you have cleared the CMOS and reset the BIOS.
You should also get a message that says press F1 to load defaults or press a certain key to access setup. Access setup (BIOS) and set the date and time. That should take care of the bad checksum error.
Another good idea is make sure the motherboard battery is not dead either.

Regards.

Always start up with cmos checksum error, cpu ratio has been change

A BIOS checksum error is most likely caused by a flat BIOS battery.
Replace the battery with a new one (it is usually a coin size battery - type CR2032) and then boot up and go to the BIOS configuration and set the Date & Time setting etc.

I got a thinkpad 2635 yesterday from a friend and upon powerup it displays an error message with 00161 and 00163 printed under it with two options ok and cancel what do i do to get into this thing

These error message relates to the BIOS and it appears the BIOS battery requires replacing because it is flat.
error 161 usually BIOS has lost its configuration/ checksum error.
error 163 usually BIOS clock not updating.
Replace this battery and go into the BIOS setting and configure the date/time settings, and hardware settings (if you are not sure select the factory default settings) save and exit
