Two quick solutions 1 change the usb port. also try reformatting i had this error when my drive was failing. if its a solid state drive like you said then it wouldnt be using ide but sata.

but try this first
under windows 7 go to my computer then sys properties then device manager
In the right pane, click to expand ide ata/atapi controllers
Identify the drive in question in the expanded menu and right click the drive
select properties and in that window select the advanced settings tab
in the transfer mode box that represents the drive open the drop down menu and select PIO only click ok and exit all windows. let me know if that works

If it was a GOOD brand adaptor then it may be that the laptop does not have enough USB power.

Another thin is NOT to use any form of HUB for these as they are quite fussy in that respect.

The other issue with the cheaper usb to ide is the power supply as many of them just dont supply enough juice to the drive to let it operate fully.

I went through quite a few before i found one that was long term reliable.

if you only just got the adaptor take it back and swap it for another brand.

There are also some limitations with smaller capacity IDE drives under 40Gb just so you are aware.

Dont use any form of USB extension either as they too add to problems.

Suggest you try it on a regular computer to make sure it is not a laptop issue

Also the USB port MUST be USB 2.0 NOT 1.0

Shows up as "Initio Combo Device Class" not a "Disk Drive"

RESOLVED the ISSUE...!!

Hi, Yesterday I get into similar problem of having my USB Drive ( WD passport Elite 320gb ) not being detected by my PC and as soon as I connect to it, Initio Combo device class drivers gets loaded and Drive do not show up in the device list...!!
I tried several options.1. Freezed my hard drive for 12 hrs in the freezer. It did not help me today.2. I have opened the USB drive shell ( becareful, I have damaged it.. see the instructions before you try t ). You can find the 2.5' HDD inside and there will be SATA to USB bridge adapter. I was having doubt on this bridge unit as I read through several blogs.3. luckily I have a unused 2.5' Laptop HDD. So I have removed this bridge unit carefully and tried to connect to my HDD. If the bridge is good, my HDD must be detected right away..But it is the same problem.. It did not work.. Hence I have confirmed that it is the bridge problem..
4. I bought a Rs. 250/- ( 5$ ) 2.5 SATA casing that is available in the market to use the 2.5' SATA HDD through USB. ( actually I do not know where I can buy only the bridge..hence bought the entire unit..which is still cheaper )
5. From the new unit, I have the USB to SATA bridge, which I have connected to my WD HDD SATA USB hard drive... Bingo.........It is detected by OS and I have started copying my important data immediately...
6. This Unit comes with a casing ..hence you may continue using this case... But some units may not fit well..still the bridge is usable..!!

I GOT all my data..with just Rs.250/- ( $5 ) ..I am happy to try this on my own..!!

Good luck with your drive..!!

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files. For example, see: https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-US for a "no data - no charge" guarantee.

HDD not recognised

HI Your Hard Drive is previously formatted and have done different partition provided by your previous machine where you took this hard drive from. Use "The Partition Magic" Software, it will help you to fix and repartition your hard drive in the new format. I have this problem before and now my hard drive can connect with any computer. The key in this issue is any hard drive goes with the original machine has been formatted and do its own partition from manufacturer so if you take it out later for use with other machine, you will need a software to completely rearrange the new partition in universal format so other computers can recognize it. This manufacturer purpose to protect your data from hacking, stealing once you take it out from the original machine. That is why when you connect it to other machine, this hard drive will not be recognized. I has this partition magic software and can make you a copy so you don't have to buy it. Just read the instruction and you can fix it for both 2.5" and 3.5" HD. Please email me at joe_dao2003@yahoo.com and provide me your mailing address, I can send the copy software to you. Regards, pingping
