SOURCE: GE Dishwasher is not draining water

GE Prifile dishwashers have a valve called a "Piston" and an "O" -Ring under the screen that become degraded over time. The part is around $10 and it takes about an hour to do the repair. You can do this yourself if you are handy and have some simple tools. You can go to the GE website and get a free owners manual.

SOURCE: I have a GE roll

First off.. the pump does not let water in.. it takes water from your sink faucette via the hose and allows it to enter the DW via an inlet electrically operated valve. If that valve is not commanded by the control system to open, then no water will enter the DW and a wash cycle will not start. Please find the informaton shown below that decribes some reasons why your DW may not be filling with water. You should go thru this series of checks to make sure you've set up the DW correctly aqnd it is not in mid cycle. If by chance you are setting it up correctly and are not in mid cycle then you may have a hardware problem with the system. I would be happy to assist you if it comes to that but I am hoping that the information below will get you started,...

Dishwasher - No Water Fill

Often the cause of a dishwasher not filling at the start of its cycle is not electrical or mechanical. Often times you may be starting your dishwasher model incorrectly which results in the machine skipping its first water fill period.

There are presently three different types of starting procedures being used:

  1. Pushbutton type. This system is found on all POTSCRUBBER models.
  2. "Turn-to-start" timer type. After latching the dishwasher door, you turn the timer dial until you hear a click. By advancing the timer dial beyond that point, its possible that the first water fill would be skipped. The first fill is necessary for automatic pre-rinsing of the dishes.

View a short video about turn-to-start timers:
    Play Video
  3. The most common type is a "push-to-start" timer dial. All that is required to initiate the cycle is to push in on the timer dial. It is NOT necessary to turn the dial.
If you are unsure as to the starting procedure used by your model please consult the Owner's Manual. Download a free copy of the Owner's Manual and/or Installation Instructions.

Here is a link to the website too.. http://www.geappliances.com/search/fast/infobase/10001005.htm

Hope this gets you going..

After wash there is still dishwashing powder left and it is caked together

The most likely cause of this is cold water inside your dishwasher. The heating element may be burned out, but in any case you always want to run your faucet untill the water is coming out hot. Then immediately start your dishwasher. Try doing this because it will help clean your dishes even if your element is bad.

DO I NEED TO RUN HOT WATER IN THE NEAREST FAUCET TO START THE DISHWASHER

This model does have an inline heater to heat the water to the proper temperature, but it does take a long time and you are recommended to run the tab on the faucet from which the dishwasher water line is tapped from. This clears all the cold water from the line

GE Dishwasher Hot Start

Here's the current situation, as established in the two months since a new GE dishwasher was installed:
  1. Tow separate service calls established the the machine is supposedly working perfectly, but does not was dishes effectively.
  2. The not water heater now heats water to the highest safe level to avoid scalding people in sinks, bathtub or shower.
  3. The spec sheet for the unit says "HotStart option - Provides optimal water temperature for dependable performance".
  4. This is obviously a lie and a fraud of the public.
  5. It appears GE decided to remove or reduce water heating to lighten its energy consumption, but it does not do so when it requires adding 20 degrees to 30 gallons in a water heater 168 hours a week instead of 4.25 gallons per load on a machine used only a few hours per week.
  6. The fix should be easy...all GE has to do is to reset the HotStart temperature so it heats water enough to dissolve the detergent and clean the dishes.
As it is, the dishwasher is only a way of drying dishes completely washed in the sink. I would not suggest buying this dishwasher.

That knocking noise is probably coming from your water line, and that happens when there is some kind of a ripple/wave effect when the water goes into your dishwasher (DW) thru the inlet/fill water valve. First turn your hot water valve off, underneath the sink coming from the wall and it usually is also going to your kitchen faucet. Then turn the electricity off by locating the breaker to the DW line and turning it off, or if it is plugged in an outlet under your sink, just unplug it. Then take the kick toe panel (panel with 2 or 4, 1/4" or philips screws) from the bottom of the dishwasher. You will then see the water hose, or could be a copper pipe, going into the valve (will have a selenoide, cylinder shape on top and have 2 wires plugged in to it). Unscrew the hose/pipe from the water valve and get a small wide bucket or pot and aim the hose/pipe to it. Slowly have someone open the water valve from under the sink while you hold it in the bucket/pot. If you hear the knocking again, you will need a plumber to check the pipes, hoses and water valve at your wall. If you don't here the knocking noise, just replace the dishwasher inlet/fill water valve part # 785330. http://www.repairclinic.com/0080.asp. Please post back.
