My grandson pressed the bin button on his game console by mistake and now cannot get onto any of the levels he had completed - has he deleted all game data for ever or could we retrieve the information somehow ??

Hi, there could be a possible way for the flipnote studio, but as for the photos and other data, they are most likely gone. The flipnote studio has a way to save online. If your grandson saved them online, their always on there and they don't get deleted.
This problem is because your PS3 software has become corrupt. The following steps will cure the problem but you will lose saved games and all other data. Your trophies will not be affected as these are stored by the Playstation Network.
Step 1. Turn your PS3 onto standby (Red light on)
Step 2. Press and hold the power button. It will beep as soon as you press it, beep 5 seconds later then beep once more 5 seconds later and then turn back to standby. Release the power button.
Step 3. Press and hold the power button again. It will beep when you first press it, beep again 5 seconds later and then beep twice quickly. Let go of the power button as soon as you hear these two beeps.
Step 4. The PS3 will start up asking you to plug in a controller with a USB cable and press the PS button. Do this and it will boot into the recovery menu.
Step 5. Choose option 5 (Restore PS3 system). This will re-install the PS3 software and restart the console.
Step 6. When the PS3 restarts you will be asked to enter the time and date and other information. When the setup is complete your PS3 will boot into the home menu normally.
Had the same problem with one of my grandson's games recently. Try getting some Contact Cleaner and spray on the gold contacts on the game. Insert and eject the game several times. Insert and power on. If it doesn't work the first time, repeat the procedure. It took me about 8 to 10 times to finally get my grandson's going again.
Should this not work, try spraying with contact cleaner and then use a small wire brush to gently brush the contacts.
Note: Contact cleaner is non-conductive so it is safe. It also evaporates very quickly.

I'm sorry to say, but your diary1 data is gone for good.
The way a save file works is it takes a data picture of that moment in the game, so everything you have done is remembered. However, another part of the saving process is it erases the data that was being stored there before, because when you tell it to save, you are telling it, even if by accident, that that old data is obsolete and you no longer need it, you need this data here now that you are giving it.
And unfortunately, games aren't like computers with recycling bins that you can go into and retrieve something you accidentally deleted. There is only so much memory in a game, so it can't waste space with something you told it to get rid of.
I feel your pain, I've done the same thing in my Harvest Moon game on the GBA. I've also deleted my Pokemon Colloseum file by accident that had my level 98 Blaziken on it. All you can do is start over.
I am not a Nintendo fan but if you go to the Download section of the Nintendo website you will probably find what you are looking for. You may have to show this to your grandson (if you are not into computers). :-) Both the user manuals as well as their game manuals are there for free downloads.
