Question about AO Smith SQ1152 Pool Pump Motor

1 Answer

AOS SQ1152 pool pump. Pool pump does not run. When powered makes a hum noise like a garbage disposal that needs to be reset. Pump is 3 years old. The implellor moves freely by hand. Could not find a pump reset button on the pump. Removed the top mounted capacitor and tried to power the pump which made the same sound. ALso ispected the rear wiring housing and the contacts appeared fine with no corosion. Am thinking it's the start capacitor

It might be the capacitor, and have another look for the reset button, if that doesent help its off to the electrical rewinders

I have a Speck Pump, model E71, only a year old. It suddenly stopped working - it was fine at the start of the season. The problem is that it just hums when turned on.

Since it hums it has power. I believe there is a start capacitor on it, that or the start switch may have failed.

Pump has power at back of motor and I can turn shaft at the back of pump. It is not running.

this motor has a run capacitor, have it tested. search your area for your local pool pump motor repair guy with free testing.. ask him how to remove it, caps can hold a charge and make for a nasty surprise.. THIS IS IF THE MOTOR HUMS OR MAKES A BUZZ NOISE if not, you will need to check the power at THE BACK OF THE MOTOR. no power check, timer, breaker, main breaker ..

Thank you for posting your question here on Fixya.com.

A typical pool pump motor is going to last about 10 – 12 years. A corroded frame and tripping breakers suggests it is at the end of its service life.

It short, it needs to be replaced...for a replacement motor quote, please get as much info off the nameplate as you can and also note what brand the pump it attaches to is and contact us thru www.arrowmotor.net or www.arrowpools.net at your convenience.

Based on what you’ve posted I’d guess it is either an AOS-USQ1102 or AOS-UST1102. Costs for those would be $177.10 OR $172.00 respectively. Your message using the contact feature on our site will confirm which is the correct one.

If this answer does not fix your problem, please comment with additional details prior to rating the answer. Positive feedback is appreciated once your problem is solved!

Pump runs for about 15 secs then cuts off.

try testing the starting capacitor by first disconnecting the power, opening the cover on the end of the motor, and test the resistance of the capacitor

Pump makes clicking noise when powered up ?

Clicking?... not knowing which clicking noise you are hearing, I will run down the most likely on a new pump.
1. When wiring the motor you may have left a wire in close proximity to the centrifical start capacitor switch. It spins at high RPMs and can be hitting a wire not properly tucked in
2. Most pool pumps are dual voltage. If you wired motor for wrong voltage than that being delivered, the motors can sometimes make noises. Clicking isn't most common, but the vibrating hum of incorrect voltage might be interpreted as a clicking noise.
3.check to make sure no wire ties, or plastic stringy tag holding devices were left in the pump intake basket.
