I have a husky 261 chainsaw, it is hard to start, I can hook up an inline spark tester and with the spark plug in the engine it has no spark,if you take the spark plug out and ground the tester(spark plug out of engine) it has spark seems to me that the coil may be weak and under compression it wo,nt spark I have seen spark plugs do this in the past but I,m not sure about this system as I have no service manual I have tried several new sprk plug,s and the outcome is the same

When you have the plug out.Take a look down the hole.Look towards the muffler side.See if there are any scratches.I have had 2 huskeys do the same thing.Sorry to say they were blowed up.If its ok inside is the plug wet when you take it out after trying to start it?it could possibley not getting gas.Plugged fuel filter,bad fuel line.When you check the spark try hooking the plug into the wire as it is when installed.Put the plug to where its touching the cylinder.Make sure the switch is on.Pull the cord and see if it has spark.It should be bluish if its good.If not it could be a bad coil.Or maby just a loose wire.The coil could also be to dirty to work right.Its easy to take out and clean.2 alan head or torx screws.To put it back in.Leave it slightly loose and put a piece of sandpaper between the magnet and coil then tighten.Just pull the paper out and your set.Hope some of this helps.

I have never heard of a Husqvarna 261 ? however cdi systems work off speed of rotation, so you may not be cranking fast enough with your plug tester connected, if the plug has a spark when you crank the engine with the plug out, it is very unlikly there is any thing wrong with it, normaly if the unit is bad you will not get a spark at all, your problem lies either with fuel starvation, or possible worn, or part seized engine, remove the muffler and check the condition of the piston through the exhaust port, any signs of scuffing or damage, and the saw will have to come apart.

Test a small engin Coil

there is no test for a magnetron or coil, either it works or it doesnt. the smaller wire that plugs into the "coil" is a shut off circuit when connected from the coil to the engine usually through a shut off switch. IF YOU DISCONNECT THIS WIRE THERE WILL BE NO WAY TO STOP THE ENGINE!!!! before purchasing a coil, go to a autoparts store and buy a inline spark tester to prove the coil has failed.

Model 175. Engine cranks will not start. What are to check out.

Hello David,
Three main things to check out are compression, spark and fuel. I would purchase a compression tester from a local parts store, they are fairly cheap and easy to use. Simply remove spark plug and screw tester into spark plug threads and turn engine over. Observe readings, you should have at least 60 psi. If not problem is internal and needs to be torn town. If compression is good, check spark with a spark tester, (also available from local parts stores). They simply plug inline between spark plug and boot. Turn engine over and observe sight glass in tester, you should see spark in sight glass when turning over. If compression and spark are both good, check fuel line to carburetor too see if its getting fuel, if not clean tank of obstruction, if it is hook line back up. If you are now getting fuel to carb, next remove air cleaner and spray a small amount of starting fluid into carb and attempt to start. If it starts temporarily and bogs down, you know the problem is carburation, because the engine is burning up the starting fluid as fuel, when the starting fluid is burned up, unit dies. Then carb will need to be removed and cleaned. Good luck and happy wrenching!

It won't start. I put in fresh fuel, carb is good get's air & fuel but will not start. what could this be?

Three main things are needed for all small engines to run: Compression, spark, and fuel. I would purchase a compression tester and a spark tester from a local auto parts store. Both are reasonably priced and easy to use. Compression tester screws into spark plug threads, then you simply pull starter rope a few times until needle on gauge stops rising and observe reading. You should have at least 60 psi and should hold awhile. Next, screw in spark plug and hook up spark tester inline, pull handle and observe spark tester. Next, check for obstructions in fuel lines to carb.These simple steps will lead you in the right direction instead of guessing. Good luck. Keep me posted with results and I can help you further.

How to test ignition module

There are plenty of spark testers on the market, if you want a quick check remove the spark plug, use a new plug with twice the plug gap 0.6mm earth against the cylinder ( away from the opem plug hole ) crank the engine at normal starting speed, if there is a spark the unit is probably fine.

Stihl 066 does not start. Replaced ignition module. Weak or no spark.

Are the poles on your flywheel blue? Are you using an open-air inline spark tester, or holding the plug against the cylinder and turning it over?

395XP chainsaw

The 395 has an electronic ignition, as this unit works off speed of rotation you need to make sure you are cranking the engine fast enough to check for a spark, to eliminate the switch and wire, dissconnect the wire from the unit itself, now try for a spark, if still no spark with a new plug, you will have to replace the unit

Need to know how to test coil, and need setting of coil to the flywheel. McCulloch 3200.

There are two ways you can check for spark.one way is to take the plug out and hook the plug wire to it and place it on the top of the head and pull the cord and see if plug fires.the other way is to use a spark tester.hook the tester up to the plug and plug wire then pull cord and see if light in tester lights up if it doe,s you have spark.the setting for the coil to flywheel is .010.

My saw won't start. how can i check the ignition?

pull the kill wire off at the ignition coil - retest for spark , if now spark faultry kill wire or switch indicated
but if no spark fit spark tester in line with h t lead and spark plug

gap tester is basically a piece of wood with 20 mm hole in middle and a hole drilled through to centre from opposing sides
the a nail that fits firmly is pushed through 1 on each side
and meet in the middle of the hole , but the points of ecah nail must align together and be exactly no less than 6.00 mm apart from each other ( place the tester inline between h t lead and plug ) use whater adaption you may need to connect to the saw
and pull the engine over as you would

if all is well the spark should jump across this gap and the gap at the plug while under compression pressure

you will see it in the the tster window

if no spark coil is problem
replace coil and set air gap to 0.010" and refit wires ands covers

cheers hope it helps

No model 61 listed @ Husqvarna.
How about a 261 here:

Enter 261 (no XPs, Es, just the numbers)
Serial number decode – for use with IPL

06 = year produced – 2006 (single digit before 2000)
15 = week produced - March
00198 = 198th unit Husky produced that week
