Our 14 year old KitchenAid Superba side by side refridgerator (Mondel KSRS22FGBT01) is not cooling the top half of the freezer section. Bottom half seems to be able to keep cold - but top half doesn't....

Do you see any ice build up on the back wall of the freezer compartment? You probably have one of the following problems: A failed defrost system, meaning the defrost timer and/or element has gone out and your evaporator coil is frozen over; you are low on freon and this too will cause your evap coil to freeze over until the freon drops so low all cooling stops; or there could be a clog in the capillary tube which is the very small diamiter copper tube that carries the condensed liquid freon to the evap coil. Unless you have gauges, a licence to buy freon and service valves (or a buddy with such) you are limited to what you can do. Here is my advice:1. unplug the frig and let it defrose over night, unplug the frig and empty the freezer to remove the back cover to look for ice, a frozen fan and if so get your hair dryer out and melt the ice so you can test the fan and the defrost element (you will need a volt/ohm meter to do the element check. You can do it.

YOU HAVE A DEFROST PROBLEM. FROST HAS BUILT UP SOMEWHERE AND THE FAN CAN'T BLOW PAST THE BLOCKAGE. OR ONLY A SMALL SECTION OF YOUR COILS IN THE FREEZER ARE COOLING DUE TO A CLOGGED FILTER OR BAD COMPRESSOR. PULL THE BACK COVER FROM INSIDE THE FREEZER AND LOOK AT THE COILS. THEY SHOULD HAVE A LIGHT FROST AVER THE ENTIRE COIL.IF IT IS A BIG BLOCK OF ICE YOU HAVE A DEFROST PROBLEM.

Refrigerator side not cooling

The fresh food section is cooled by the freezer section by forced air supplied by a fan. If you have air flow, check the temp inside the freezer. It should be between 0 and -10. If not look inside your freezer and see if you have ice built up on the back panel. If so you have a defrost problem that is most likely a bad defrost heater, a bad termination thermostat or timer. If ther is no ice then check your fan under the refrig. If you can hear the compressor running it should be turning. If this all checks out then you have a freon system problem like. Low Freon pressure or a restriction.

GE regrigerator not cooling or freezing

first defrost it by turning it off for 1\2 to 1 full day,put towels on the floor to catch the water, when a refridgerator gets frosted up it cant circulate the cold air,and if its one with the freezer on top then the cold air cant blow down into the refridgerator, check inside the refridgerator at the top where the thermostat cover is there will be a vent hole,it could have ice built up so much that its totally blocking the air flow. This usually happens when hot food is put in the refridgerator and causes steam,or the refridgerator runs too much caused by bad door seals,or the cooling fins on the back or bottom underneath plugged with dust and the freon gets too hot causing condensation inside the freezer which causes it to frost up,a plugged drain hole will back up water and freeze, the fan in the freezer may have stopped working, which is about a $60.00 part, and finally a bad defrost element (about a $40.00 part)which is a glass tube inside the freezer with a coiled up wire inside it that heats up at certain times to defrost any ice build up,(which is the last thing to check)

Refridgerator not cooling

is it side by side or freezer on top/bottom...check to see if the fan inside the freezer is running when the compressor is running..also check to see if ice is covering the evaporator coils.. the freezing should be even with a thin layer of ice/ not partically melted..sometimes the ice forms in the vents and stops the air flow...to review...check and see if fan is working in freezer
check to see if vents are clogged......good luck!!

Check to see if there is frost on the rear wall o f the freezer wall. If so, the units cooling coils (behind the frost) may be covered with ice. Defrosting is necessary. The refrigerator may not be defrosting at regular intervals a required. Standing open for a couple of days should defrost it but it will still be necessary to find out why it frosted over. There is a defrost control that automatically melts ice from the cooling coils on a regular basis. Maybe this control is not functioning.

Refridgerator not cooling off, but freezer is working. Fridge is only 3 years old.

check to see if fan is running in the freezer, if not replace fan. this is the usual problem, however may be more than that. you may have a defrost issue, by removing the back cover in the freezer side you can tell if the coils look like a block of ice or not.(not supposed to). if so check defrost components, defrost heater, defrost thermostat, and defrost timer.

sound like you said a sealed system problem if compressor is running check the black coil under ref by the fan and see if it is warm if not you have lost freon just trash it then if it is see if fan in freezer is running if so pull back cover in freezer and see if coil starts to freeze if you have a ice block on coil then it is a defrost problem good luck
