Question about Kenmore Dryers

Open Question

I bought a used kenmore gas dryer Model #7207611w. I hooked everything up and checked all connections for a gas leak, all were good. However when I turned the dryer on it did not get hot and no flame was visible through the lower front panel, and I could smell gas like it was leaking. Is there a pilot light or is it lit by a glow plug type set up?

Is it normal to get a faint gas smell when you hook up you'r gas dryer?

Absolutely. Your dryer runs on gas, and the gas kicks on when the heating element engages. It should be so faint though. If you smell it continuously then check your connections with soapy water, if their is a leak then shut off the gas and try using soap pipe dope, or teflon tape on the threads, then recheck. My guess is its the regulator near the heating element. Good luck

I have an Kenmore gas dryer model 110.87174100 which was disconnected temporarily. Now it is reconnected to the gas line. How is it ignited?

this unit, and most dryers nowadays, uses an ignitor.  it is an electronic glowbar that will ignite the gas.  nothing to light just, if the gas connection is good and you are sure of no leaks, go ahead and start drying...

Everything hooked up but smells like gas. Checked line with soapy water mix. No leaks. What's wrong?

If everything is hooked up and you still smell gas you still have a leak. The gas valve could be letting out gas if the burner is not igniting, however it sounds like you have a small leak on your line which will not be detected by just soapy water. You need to go to a hardware store or a place like home depot and get what's called MegaBubble Leak Detector or a similar brand of leak detector. What this stuff is designed to do is bubble up with massive bubbles where your leak is and it will detect even the smallest leak. If there is no large bubbles there is no leak. Don't be afraid to over do it when putting this stuff on the pipe.

Can you use copper gas line to hook up a gas dryer

Yes copper is fine to hook up your dryer, just use flare fittings, not compression fittings, this is to guard against leaks.

Is gas turned on with pilot light or electronic?

No pilot. Unplug the power to the unit and it cannot run/ignite. There is a shutoff on the valve behind the front panel if you want to turn off the gas supply without moving the dryer.

I have a Kenmore Series 90 gas dryer. Works fine.

The only source of a gas leak from inside the dryer itself is the gas valve. They can sometimes leak a little gas when you first turn the gas on after hooking it up. If your gas pressure is normal (and I'm guessing the plumber checked it) and your other gas appliances are working properly, the dryer gas valve is faulty and should be checked by a qualified appliance servicer.

Connect Gas Supply Pipe
(Gas Dryer ONLY)
For further assistance, refer to section on Gas
1. Make certain your dryer is equipped for use with the
type of gas in your laundry room. Dryer is equipped at
the factory for Natural Gas with a 3/8” N.P.T. gas
2. Remove the shipping cap from the gas connection at
the rear of the dryer. Make sure you do not damage the
pipe thread when removing the cap.
3. Connect to gas supply pipe using a new flexible
stainless steel connector.
4. Tighten all connections securely. Turn on gas and
check all pipe connections (internal & external) for
gas leaks with a non-corrosive leak detection fluid.
5. For L.P. (Liquefied Petroleum) gas connection, refer
to section on Gas Requirements.
