See if you can put a volt meter on the metal contacks of the charger to see what voltage it is producing. If you have a friend who has the same drill have him try to charge your batteries and then measure the battery voltage.

measured ~18VDC with an analog meter - do not have another charger to check - this is my second charger with same results - can both batteries be defective?

It sounds like the batteries are defective. They should measure at least 14 volts.

Black decker cordless drill ldx120 runs for a second and shuts off, battery fully charged and the led light comes on and is bright.

The brushes on the motor may be worn . The battery may have several bad cells in it. The led lite only needs 2 volts for full brightness.

Chargers will out last batteries by a long time. You will need to get a new battery. Black & Decker is a cheap household brand and does not hold up for long periods of time. I have better brands and buy several new batteries every year.

One thing I,ve found with cordless tool batteries is that if they're completely dead, the charger won't recognize them. Try hooking a known good battery with a charge up to the problem battery, terminal for terminal, with small jumpers. Leave it hooked up for a minute, maybe a minute and a half. this should be sufficient to provide just enough charge to bring the battery up to the "threshold level" required for the charger to recognize it. Then, simply charge the battery in the normal way. If this doesn't work, you may need new batteries, or a new charger. Hope this helps you.

Charger doesn't charge anymore

If you are comfortable with removing the upper half of the housing, unplug charger and remove the screws, take a look at the circiut board for a "cold" solder joint or broken component, usually the round ceramic looking piece with the copper wire around it. but look at the whole board.

Some batteries develop 'memory'. Run the batteries down until they are completely dead, then recharge them fully. Do this a couple times to get them back to normal.

Skil cordless drill model 2362 - won't charge

I have the same problem. The guys at Batterries Plus told me that 7.2 volt battereis are not easily replaced and definately not through them. If you left it charging for to long (ie over a week when you were gone like me) then the battery is never gonna charge again. You might as well find the same model of dril at skil's reconditioned site for around $40 or buy a brand new one for $60 or $70
