Question about Goodman Heating & Cooling

1 Answer

After the cooling down cycle when the heater automatically shuts off a loud pop is heard as if someone has banged on the outside of the unit. I have tried changing the fan speed and changing the filters but the only thing that seems to work is to remove the filter altogether. It is a vertical flow unit with a filter box at the base.

Is it possible to put some sort of buffers against the outside walls of the unit to stop this expansion and contraction? The noise wakes me up in the middle of the night. I would use fire retardent material of course.

Hi,
Other then the noise being an annoyance there is probably nothing majorly wrong...
The sound you are hearing is the metal contracting after it has expanded from heating up...the air pressure will keep it in place until the blower stops and then it pops as it snaps back into place...

I would as a precaution watch the flame on the burners as the blower starts up to make sure the flames do not change...if they do change in anyway, then the heat exchanger is cracked, and that is very dangerous... make sure to stop using the furnace if that is the case...

The problem is that it probably is an internal problem....not the outside sheet metal....

If you can figure out how to increase the fan speed it may help....if removing the filter helps then increasing hte fan speed may also help...

Find the iwres coming from the blower motor...the red wire is probably the heating speed...if there are any wires of other colors coming from the motor... switch one of them with the red one and that will speed up the motor and that may help...

Of course...make sure to remove all power to the unit first!!

The speeds usually are colored in this order... red, yellow, blue, and black...with black the fastest...

My car was off for 14 hours; I was standing beside it in the garage and a loud bang sound came from under the hood. I popped the hood and cannot see anything wrong. Am litle afraid to start it!! What

Is your car well protected with antifreeze? If not, maybe a freeze plug came out. Living in Montana, cars stay outside all winter. I always use a 50-50 solution of antifreeze. Never had coolant freeze up.
Before cranking the car, check that your timing belt did not pop. Don't know how it could, sitting there 14 hours, but turn crank slowly by hand, and check that camshaft is also turning.

The heating elements had burned up in the unit therefor creating a dead short on that circuit. Main breakers on homes and buildings are VERY sensitive and will sometimes trip before the smaller branch cicuit breakers will . So the popping you heard was the heating elements breaking down inside the unit it can be some what noisy.

Which is your model.
Also how about cooling temperatures are they ok.
Is the sound like the motor compressor hemmering or the fan blades hammer.

Quite simply - the unit has suffered component failure - most likely more than one. Capacitors are the usual source of noisy 'bang' or 'pop' sounds, followed by diodes and bridge rectifiers. If you have some knowledge of electronics, you can attempt repair, but, if none, I suggest leaving possible repairs to someone who does.
The humming sound you hear is the transformer under stress, and, if left connected, it too will die.

Banging noise when motor turns off

Have you replaced your air filter recently? Often this is a symptom of a restricted return. The blower almost causes a vacuum in the duct work, and when the system shuts down the duct "pop" back out, causing this banging noise. Hope this helps

Very loud wall heater (bang!!) heat up and cool down.

cozy heat exchangers do tend to make a lil more noise than avg. if its popping before the blower comes on its proubly the heat exchanger expanding. you would have to watch the exchanger while it was heating to see exactly what is causing the noise. but as a renter you should try reporting it to the landlord first and try to get a tech there before digging yourself

My AC unit keeps freezing up on the copper lines going into the house from the outside unit. It also freezes up on the inside lines and the air is not cooling my home down.

Operate your air conditioner with the fan in the on position. But first turn the fan on, turn the temp up or shut the cooling off. Your coil is more than likely frozen over. At night when outside temperature drops the refrigerant pressure and temperature in the system also drops. This action can cause icing of the cooling coil, with the fan in automatic everything shuts down at the end of a cooling cycle. Thus no air movement to melt ice on previous cooling cycle.
