If you have already been using a monitor, then your laptop is already set up to push the video signal out through the VGA port.. so what is likely the cause here is a simple button on the Acer screen that selects the input. The Acer flatscreen probably has a couple places a cable can plug it, and you may have to select the proper input port for it to recognize the video signal.

Probably not a bad monitor, but can't rule that out yet. Are there any very slim, almost hidden buttons just behind the bezel of the monitor? Or maybe the edges are touch sensitive? If not.. then it won't be a selection switch. Only thing I can think of off hand at that point would be FN-F5 (or whatever the function key is on your laptop to enable external monitor mode)

How to view my lap top on my flat screen

Connecting an External Monitor or Data Projector
You can switch to anexternal monitor by two methods.1. Connect the externalmonitor to the laptop's video port, power up the external monitor first and thelaptop. The video information will automatically switch to the externalmonitor.2. If you power up thelaptop first then you can switch the video output to the external monitor bypressing the Fn key and one of the Function keys, depending upon your make andmodel laptop. You can also toggle between the external monitor or both LCDscreen plus the external monitor or back to LCD screen only by pressing the Fnkey plus one of the function key. Here is a list of keycombinations for some of the laptops :-IBM ThinkPad = Fn + F7HP and Compaq = Fn + F4Toshiba = Fn + F5Dell = Fn + F8

Howdo i connect my laptop to my flat screen

Be nice if you listed the Model Number of the Toshiba laptop.
I could post concise exacting information. Without it, all I can do is post generic info. (Bottom of laptop in white Service Tag, or sticker)

On the back, or one of the sides of the laptop, is a VGA connector.
(RGB monitor may be stated)

Example of a VGA cable, and a VGA connector,

(May not be blue in color)

The external monitor (VGA monitor), can be a CRT monitor that looks like a small TV, or a flat screen monitor that has a VGA cable.

Laptop OFF, monitor OFF, plug the external monitor into the VGA port on the laptop.
Turn the monitor on. IF a CRT monitor allow it to warm up for a few minutes.

Turn the laptop on. By default the external monitor should graphics.
If not, press, and hold down on the Fn key, and at the same time, tap once on the external display toggle-over key.

The Display Toggle-Over key, is one of the Function keys at the top of the keyboard.
Different models use different keys, so there is no way to state just one.

Some examples are F3, or F4, or F7.

The F key will have a symbol of a monitor on it. Looks like an empty rectangle with rounded corners. May have an Arrow on one side.
Look at the User Guide, or go to Toshiba Support, or state the Model Number in a Comment, to find out what particular F key is the display toggle-over key.

You may have to hold down on the Fn key, and tap the display toggle-over key more than once.
There are least these three options allowed;

1) Internal display of laptop ONLY
2) Internal AND external display
3) External display ONLY

For additional questions please post in a Comment.

I would like to disassemble my Toshiba Laptop. Model M35X-S311. So I can install a Power Jack on the Motherboard.

Hi there,
I tried that once with an Acer. When I opened it up I went to far about an inch and a half to be exact. There was a 1/4 inch wide cable hooked to the top board and I broke the plastic plugin that it was hooked to and also pulled the end off of the cable.Toshiba's are harder to work on screens especially.I have one with a cracked screen now and the cheep-st is $360.00 from Toshiba and they only take one screen ,the hp has a choice of 11 different screens, only 1 will fit.I just hook up to my monitor.
The Acer is a paper weight. If you want to do this read and watch everything you can. Here is a Utube page that shows what you want to do.
Thank You for choosing ps all I was going to do was fix the power cord.

You really do need to change the screen of the laptop to be able to use it. But pending the time it is changed, due to the expensive cost, u could connect the display to a desktop monitor. Though this might imepede mobility. Hope that helped though?

I'm sorry my friend but seems your LCD monitor having problem. There are three options with your LCD monitor. Option 1: repair your LCD monitor *commonly problems are the LCD inverter*. Option 2: Replace LCD monitor with a new LCD monitor. Option 3: Instead using your dim LCD monitor plug CRT or LCD monitor external serve as your monitor. Have a nice day.

That red line

give more details please.
- case 1 : does it not turn on at all ?
- case 2: or does the screen stay blank with that red line, but laptop still makes noises (a sign for hardware activity and a proper boot up..!, but the lcd monitor is broke then)
- case 3: or do have a steady red line on the display all the time whatever you do in windows?
(your lcd monitor maybe damaged in that area,) you will have to use it that way..then.

you may try to connect any other vga monitor to the laptop's graphic card (the 3 -row pin input in the back of the laptop) to double-check.
In both last error cases, just to see if error is still there (if not, you're lucky, work with the external monitor then.., if yes, it's the laptops' graphics card then, bad luck as in case 1).

check this out, if still problems, please give more prob details - you know where to find us, don't you? :-)

Suddenly a black screen!

If your good with computer or know some one that is, sugggest you to remove the LCD rim, and clean the ribbon filament that is connected to the monitor. Sometimes this filament get's dirty and just need to be clean from a cotton swab.
Another solution is for you to plug in a monitor to the laptop.
