Try sanding the rough rust off and touching it up with some nail polish. And make sure that all SHARP items are washed by hand so they don't slice through the protective covering.

Black (rust colour) stains in the carafe

The fact that is is a stainless steel container makes it highly unlikely that it is rust. You should never drink out of a rust container. I would suggest a highly caustic but non-toxic cleaning agent. I'd start with vinegar or lemon juice. If you can get your hand in there, let it sit for a while and give it a scrub. Steel wool would definitely get the nasty stuff off but may also compromise any type of protective coating so inspect the metal to see if it has any type of coating over it (like an enamel glaze) should be bare stainless though.

Using stainless steel utensils in a microwave oven

Every one knows that one cannot use metal utensils/bowls in a microwave oven.
But did you know that this does not apply to a utensil/bowl made out of stainless steel?
Try it this way.
Put some water in a stainless steel container and place it in the microwave for 5 seconds. The water will heat up without any sparks being created.
One could actually heat up anything in this way without any danger of causing a fire.

Dropped something down the lint trap

If it's a metal utensil that responds to magnetism, try a magnet on a string, or one of those telescoping magnetic picker-upper tools to get it out.

What is the problem with earthenware and enamelware utensils?

According to wikipedia "Earthenware utensils suffer from brittleness when subjected to rapid large changes in temperature, as commonly occur in cooking, and the glazing of earthenware often contains lead, which is poisonous." "In addition to their problems with thermal shock, enamelware utensils require careful handling, as careful as for glassware, because they are prone to chipping"

Why can't you use metal utensils on a Teflon pan?

You shouldn't use any material like a rough sponge or a metal spatula on a Teflon frying pan because they can scratch. Once scratched, it can release a component that is believed to be cancerous.
