Question about Craftsman Garden

2 Answers

I have a Craftsmans riding mower with a Kohler pro 17 HP OHV Model # CV490S Spec# 27508 OEM Prod# 177745... A friend was over and hooked up the battery backwards, it sparked and alittle smoke came out from under the seat area. It has a 15Amp fuse that started melting but the fuse did not break. I replaced the fuse and hooked the battery up correctly, However nothing happened not a click or anything. I replaced the solenoid and the switch to start the mower and tried to check the wiring with an ohms meter. All wires has great reading. Now it still will not start or even make a click. I can jump the solenoid and the motor will turn over, but not run... What do I do???

Ignition signal wire to the solenoid may not have power or in the wrong location on the solenoid. I would also check for power at the wire and see if there is power to it when your key is in the crank position if there isn't you either have a bad wire or another fuse.. On mine there was a fuse by there steering column down low (20amp)

Hi,

according to your problem first make sure the battery is OK and check the wires are connected properly. Check the engine. You can rotate the engine governor shaft clockwise and tighten the governor lever. You can contact your nearest technician.

Hi, whenever a supply, battery etc, is hooked up in reverse usually we must expect catastrophic destruction of almost ALL the sensitive, and polarity conscious components.

Often there is Polarity protection, usually by way of a Diode, this may, stop damage, but usually the Diode is not "Fast" enough to prevent damage, and also usually ends in the destruction of this diode, in any event, it will usually go "Open" circuit.

"Letting the smoke out" as we engineers say, is never a good thing, and is also usually the "Tip" of the iceberg so to speak, as if this happens then usually "Other" damage will have been caused too, but not to such a destructive level.

Whenever this type of event happens, the entire board should be suspect, and NOT repaired, unless complete semiconductor & discretes are replaced in totality, and this usually isn't an option, In these cases we usually replace the entire board with a NEW known good unit. As even if successfully repaired, no doubt the board would have been so stressed by the polarity reversal that "Other" components would simply "Fail" over subsequent time.

What to do... Replace that board, and hope that there isn't any Co-lateral damage elsewhere.

Also get a service manual.

Can you give me a ballpark figure on replacing a head gasket on a older Craftsman riding lawn mower...

there are many variables, since you didn't give any specifics. if it is an older, single cylinder, L-head engine, labor would be roughly 1/2 hour; if an older twin, L-head, about 1 hour; if it's a kohler, add about 1/2 hour; if it's a single, OHV, about 1 hour; if a twin OHV, 1 1/2 hours; if a kohler, add 1/2 hour. each shop has it's own labor rate. flat rate manuals will vary and are not realistic when dealing with old, possibly rusted or frozen bolts, which will increase the cost of repair. a new head gasket will usually cost between $5 to $30, depending on which engine you have. {some older craftsmans had a briggs laid sideways or an onan. these will require a lot more work and the labor would be higher]
