Question about Altec Lansing MX5021 System

2 Answers

I have a set of MX5021 speakers with Remote Control that I am very happy with. However it seems that I am not the only one who likes them - our 2 Guinea pigs do too; or at least the remote control cable!! The result is that whilst all appears to still be ok they have managed to strip off most of the outer sheath and some of the metallic shielding underneath over a significant length of the RC cable. As AL have discontinued this model and don't have any spares in store can someone advise me of a solution?

It's not the cable from the PC to the Powered sub-woofer or even the cables to the satellite speakers that are the problem. It's the Remote Control cable that also acts as the on/off to the unit.

Many thanks Pabloloco. I'll give it a go.

If the cable still works fine, consider yourself lucky I suppose.
Here's my cable refurbishment advice:
Quickest cheapest fix - wrap the damaged cable in plain old PVC tape (black electricians tape).
Level 2 fix - replace the metallic shielding by purchasing a roll of adhesive aluminum heater duct tape for a place like Home Depot, then wrap with PVC tape.
Level 3 fix - protect your refurbished cable from future guinea pig damage with a length of flexible plastic conduit, a product sold at places like The Source for 'tiding' or bundling several cables together.

I hope that helps.

Hello
As it is PC connected system, you can change the wires. Wires of good quality [Monster is preferable] must be used. The input connection to the subwoofer box, from PC oly should be connected with two core shield wire. There is good quality shield wire can be purchased from most of the standard electronic spare parts shop. Never use more than enough lengh of sheld wire to connect between PC and subwoofer. As lengh increses, there is a possibility that some stray HUM noise also enter, and can be heard through the sub. So use enough lenght to connect. Extra speakers, whatever type it may be, can connected with Monster Cable. Care should be taken when you solder the speaker cable, that speakers has both positive and negative terminals marked on it. All the positive terminals of all speakers must be connected to positive speaker rail only. Otherwise, sound effect will decrease. If you have any more doubts, and need anymore assistance, feel free to get me by Fixya. OK.

My altec lansing mx5021 speakers problem

The problem I have found is the contact glue between the back panel and circuit board inside the sub woofer. The glue becomes conductive after some time (2 years..!!) and needs to be scraped away from across tracks, you can tell the problem areas as the glue is pale yellow but goes brown and conductive over time. Good luck.
