A clean installation consists of removing all data from your hard disk by repartitioning and reformatting your hard disk and reinstalling the operating system and programs to an empty (clean) hard disk. For more information about important things to consider before you partition and format you hard disk and how to partition and format your hard disk by using the Windows XP Setup program, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: 313348(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313348/ ) How to partition and format a hard disk by using Windows XP Setup program
To perform a clean installation of Windows XP, follow these steps:
Back up all important information before you perform a clean installation of Windows XP. Save the backup to an external location, such as a CD or external hard disk.
Start your computer from the Windows XP CD. To do this, insert the Windows XP CD into your CD drive or DVD drive, and then restart your computer.
Note To boot from your Windows XP CD, the BIOS settings on your computer must be configured to do this.
When you see the "Press any key to boot from CD" message, press any key to start the computer from the Windows XP CD.
At the Welcome to Setup screen, press ENTER to start Windows XP Setup.
Read the Microsoft Software License Terms, and then press F8.
Follow the instructions on the screen to select and format a partition where you want to install Windows XP.

If you are reinstalling Windows XP from a NON-DELL disc, and trying to use the Dell OEM product key, it will not work.
OEM versions of Windows have a modified precopy2.cab and a retail version of XP will not validate the OED product key from the chassis. This is because the OEM media for Dell has a precopy2.cab that pre-loads the product key when the system is BOOTED to the OEM media (It also pre-activates the OS)
Your choices at the point are:
Re-install the OS from a Dell OEM CD (They can be purchased on EBay for around $20, and only work on Dell Systems)
You may need to try installing windows xp. I had a gateway that had a brand new hard drive and wouldn't take 98, but installed xp flawlessly. Look at the computer and see if it says designed for Windows XP
Try booting with your windows xp installation cd in the drive. See if it will give you a repair or restore option when doing this. If it does not then it's possible your computer has a virus. You can check this by booting up with your anti virus cd in the drive and let it do a system scan. Hope this helps & please remember to rate my answer. Thanks.
under the laptop xp home sticker. have u backed up personal files ? pics docs music ?
turn pc on .repeatedly tap F12 then put xp cd in it. then choose cdrom. then it will boot to a blue screen. loading stuff on bottom 2 minutes.then 2 options repair console or install windows. choose second. then F8 i agree to licensing terms and then drive is listed.. at that point u can delete and create partition then it will ask to format i do quick. then rest is easy.
