Hi, I have a Toshiba Satellite L350D laptop which when booted up asks for a HDD password (which I do not remember setting at any point). As I understand it, the password is stored on the eeprom on the motherboard so no amount of BIOS flashing etc will have any effect. The odd thing is though, If I remove the hard drive completely the computer will boot from the cd. If I then connect the hard drive while it is booting from the cd drive then reboot, Windows starts up normally without being asked for the HDD password again. This remains the case no matter how many times I reboot the computer. I only get asked for the HDD password again when I switch the computer off then switch it back on again. Can anyone help sort this out as it is obviously not an ideal situation to be having to remove the hard drive and replace it everytime I switch the computer back on, eventually it will break the sata connectors i would have thought. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated, many thanks!! .

Thanks hannaneh, I shall try a new HDD but I just hope that I still don't get asked for a password because as I mentioned, i believe the password is stored in the eeprom on the motherboard so any HDD it detects it will ask for a password. I don't know if this is correct?

HDD passwords are designed to be 100% secure and there is nothing available to reset or remove the HDD password whether the password failure is caused by human error or HDD defect.
Users must ensure they have regular backups.Unfortunately,a new HDD will be required and is not covered by the standard warranty.

We have different kinds of password. We have HDD,BIOS and Windows log-in password. Are you sure that its HDD?For if in case its BIOS, resetting CMOS battery will fix it. You mentioned that the password is stored in the eeprom on the motherboard so any HDD it detects it will ask for a password - then it can be a BIOS password. You dont need a different HDD for it will ask you the same credentials, If upon boot up you come up with a black screen and a blue smal windows that says Enter Password, then that could be BIOS.

My toshiba satellite c655 laptop has a black screen with a blue box asking for a current password

Sounds like the HDD password or Bios password got set.

You may need to talk to the person who set that password to be able to finish booting up the computer.

If that person is not available - you can call the Toshiba 1-800-457-7777. They may want to charge you for the over the phone support - but they should be able to walk you through how to get around the Bios or Hdd password if that is indeed your problem.

Had a problem with Toshiba Satellite A205-S5800. Could not remember password, or the laptop created a new password after 3 tries at trying to remember. Ran recovery disc, and now the HDD password box...

Power the laptop off. Unplug it. Remove the battery. Turn it over. Open the bottom panels. Look for a small battery. Unplug this battery. Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds. RE-Assemble everything. Turn it back on - hopefully it has cleared the settings and you will be prompted to enter the BIOS.

You need to remember what the password is or take it to a Toshiba dealer who can fix it for you.

Hdd1 password

Most Toshiba laptops you need an adapter that jumps several wires across the Parallel port which triggers the BIOS to reset. You can purchase those online at places like EBAY.

I have a toshiba satellite. when i turn on the laptop, it is asking me for a password, which i can't remember what it is. what can i do.

The password is set up before it boots up, meaning the password is set in the BIOS, the only way you can undo this password is to bring it to a technician. It gonna need reformating.

Did you put a password on it?

Cant boot

If you are sure no one has tampered with it and entered a HDD password and it is not prompting for a password then it is most likely a HDD failure. It is possible the BIOS will still recognize the HDD. Try disconnecting and reconnecting the HDD if you can access it there should be screws on the bottom marked with a cylinder symbol.
