Hi,

Welcome to Fixya. If you want to make the network secure you need to access the router page and put a security on it.

To access the router page just open a browser then type 192.168.1.1, the Default username is blank and the password is admin. Go to the Wireless Tab select Wireless Security you can select either WPA,WPA2 or WEP and under the Security Mode you will see there Network Key or Wep Key. The Network Key or Wep Key serves as a password or security code on your network to make it secure.

You can also reset the router by pressing the Reset button at the back of it for 15-30 seconds using a Pen and a Paper Clip.

If this works dont forget to say thanks. Thanks for using Fixya.

Wireless Router

It is usually easiest to run the install wizard, but be sure to be ready to set the items listed below. To get access, start your browser, and put 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1, or other address for your unit, into the ADDRESS bar (not search box) of your internet browser. Every unit has unique access login and passwords, some are admin with no password, some are admin and admin...seek access information from the website of the manufacturer of your unit.

Things to set:

Note: Routers are intended to be set by geeks. You have to SAVE EVERY page before you leave it, or the changes will be lost. A geek knows this (apparently). The router gives no protest...just dumps your changes.

1. Login password (RECORD THIS!!). Consider taping to bottom of the router. Physical access is not the security issue.

2. Set a recognizable system ID.

3. Invoke wireless security of at least WEP.

a. Assign your own access code, 10 digit home or cell #. Consider taping this information to bottom of the router. (Physical access is usually not the security issue.)

4. Check that your router is set to broadcast its' presence.

If the Wireless device isn't secured, Secure it. Set up a SSID and Security Key(password). If it is secured, change the Security Key(password), Use the Linksys Setup Manual found here: http://support.linksys.com/en-us/support/routers/WRT120N Always Secure your Wireless. If unsecure your signal, at best, COULD be use by anyone to connect to the web using your resources and slowing down your activity. At worst, use your signal for nefarious purposes causing you a great deal of Pain and Heartache, and MAYBE the FBI knocking at your door.

I want to secure an unsecured linksys router

Connect a LAN cable from the Linksys to the LAN port on your computer.
Open a browser and enter the Linksys configuration URL
http://192.168.1.1
The default login = admin
The default PW = admin
You can protect your router by changing the default admin PW (write it down and put it in a safe place)
Go to the wireless configuration and set up the SSID and WPA or WPA2 encryption to protect your wireless network and Internet from unauthorized access.
Now apply these settings to the wireless card in your laptop/computer.
To secure your wireless network from unauthorized access, please click on this link and follow my instructions :- http://www.fixya.com/support/r3559128-wireless_router_security

Please help me get my password back i beg you

Unfortunately there is no way of recovering your password however if you reset your router it will allow you to connect to the internet without a password however this will make your router unsecure. To reset press and hold the reset button in the back of the modem for 15 seconds or until router resets, You may want to secure your router after, depending on what type of router you have you will want to go directly to the router website for example Netgear router www.netgear.com Linksys router www.linksys.com locate securing router on the website and it will show you step by step how to secure your router. Good Luck

How do i make my linksys router secure as at the moment it is unsecured

It depends what you mean by secure. If it is just acces to the router settings then add an adminstrator password. If it is wireless security you are refering to then goto you wireless settings and choose WPA2 as i find it more secure however you can choose any you would like.

Wireless router connection unsecured

Open a browser and type in the address bar 192.168.1.1
It'll prompt you for a username and password, if you used the Linksys Installation CD, remember the username and password that you provided. Else, leave the username blank and key in admin for the password.

Once inside the router, click the Wireless Tab then the Wireless Security sub-tab.
Enable and choose WPA Personal and provide a password for your wireless network at the WPA Shared Key section.
Click Save settings at the bottom.

Your computers will need to reconnect to your network and asked for the security password.
