Question about Porter Cable RN175 Roofing Coil Nailer

1 Answer

My RN 175 roofing nailer (porter cable) fires like a machine gun. I cleaned the trigger valve assembly and replaced the o-ring at top of the asembly. Still fires in high repetition.

With most nailers there is a safety device that has to be depressed as you press the gun against the work that is being nailed. This safety device might be damaged or jammed in the firing position allowing the gun to act like an automatic.

Rn 46 roofing nailer. Why is it leaking air out the top?

I'd suggest disconnecting it from the air supply, then completely dismantling and cleaning it. Check the function of all parts during re-assembly and lubrication. Chances are that you may find the linkage in the trigger assembly is binding.
These tools are usually very reliable and failure is associated with jammed parts.

How do I replace the trigger valve assembly on a Porter Cable DA250C nail gun

There is one pin with a retaining o-ring that must be removed holding the trigger arm in - then there are 2 roll pins that must be driven out with a small punch that hold the trigger valve. Once the 2 pins are removed the trigger valve can be pulled straight out.
When you install the new trigger make sure the recesses in the trigger line up with the holes for the retaining pins.

Sounds like your gun needs servicing. normally strip, clean and usually fit new O rings to head valve assy, piston & usually sleeve.

I have seen this on dewalt and p/c guns. Usually caused by trigger valve but you mention that trigger valve is new. If the headvalve does not seat correctly on the top of the cylinder, the in-rush of air will leak past cylinder seal and push down the piston (feels like you fired the gun ) . Difficult to pin down the problem but could be headvalve is sticking slightly open. I would suspect headvalve orings too tight or spring in head is weak or cylinder in head is worn. Easy to check. Remove the head and push in the headvalve with thumbs. The valve should be stiff to depress but return freely. Check that the cylinder in the head where the outer headvalve oring makes contact is not scratched or worn. If scratched, sand with fine sandpaper till smooth. If worn and depressed, replace head. If spring feels weak, stretch it a bit pulling it apart. Lube cylinder /orings with white grease. Untill you find the problem, do not load nails untill after airline is connected. On the dewalt guns, firing when air is connected is due to the trigger firing pin orings worn. You could check this on your gun by spraying soapy water on the trigger valve under the trigger then connect the airline. If air is blowing out the trigger when you connect air, most likely faulty valve. Good luck and let me know what you find out on the unusual problem.

My porter cable roofing nailer rn175 type 1 it fire's and the rod stayed out and air comes out what part do I need to fix

Could have check valve out of place or broken. Easy to check. Remove head and pull out the cylinder and the round cylinder spacer. Look for black band that should have been covering small holes just below the cylinder spacer. Replace band if broken or if good install the cylinder ring on the cylinder then install the band and finally reinstall the assembly into gun. Look for any broken/cracked parts in the head of the gun. Good luck

Worn trigger valve orings will cause gun to fire twice, and /or attempting to single fire nail with bump-fire trigger. Easy test, look closely at firing pin under trigger. It should fit snuggly an not move from side to side in valve. If loose, replace valve. If your nailer has bump-fire trigger, do no attempt to place gun then fire one shot because the gun will most likely double fire. Good luck.

Only shoots out one nail for every 4 or 5 trigger pulls

The gun will miss fire if the driver does not return to top position allowing nails to move into position. Could be bent driver, faulty trigger, cracked lower bumper or check valve not in place. Easy to check if trigger. Remove air supply, and remove the pin holding the trigger. Fire the nailer by depressing the firing pin with your finger. If the gun works ok, single fire trigger is faulty or safety foot is out of adjustment. If still miss fire, remove head and pull out cylinder and piston. Check for bent driver, cracked lower bumper or black band (check valve) is out of place on outer part of cylinder covering a row of holes.

Replace the O Rings and the trigger valve assembly. 9/10 sticking rods on the Porter Cable guns is caused by a faulty TVA.
