Question about Sony PlayStation 2 (PS2) Console

1 Answer

When I close the lid of my grandson's PS2, the laser attempts to read however the disc will not rotate. I have fitted a new spindle motor assembly then a complete laser spindle assembly all to no avail. Any suggestions

I have not yet attempted to do the modification as you have suggested as this does not deal with the problem that I am experiencing.

The spindle motor that turns the disc is not turning at all. The laser moves accross the disk however as the disc is not rotating at all the system reports that 'no data is found'.

I am fully experienced with working on CD and DVD players in my line of business however as the Playstation is new to me I have no indication what teh cause is as to why the disc does not spin up at all.

I have firstly replaced the spindle motor with a new unit however this failed to alter the situation. I then replaced the entire laser and spindle assembly and again to no avail.

Do you have any idea as to why the disc does not even begin to turn. I have noted that there is a brake that stops the disc turning when the lid opens however I have bypassed this in my tests.

Kind regards and hoping you are able to advise what the problem could be.

Hi proposch,

If system won't read a disc it might cause by misaligned laser. As system gets older sometimes laser gets misaligned a little bit. You just need to change the angle of the PS2's laser lens. Maybe you already tried this procedure, but anyway just give it a try again. This is very important, during the process please do not touch anything while the system is plugged in. Also do not look at the laser if it's reading.

Just to give you a disclaimer, if system is still in warranty I recommend to first consult the manufacturer because this procedure might void the system's warranty.

To correct the problem please follow these steps:

1. Take out the screws at the bottom.

2. Now looking at the front of the PS2, tilt the top half towards you. Please be careful because the ribbon cable that connects the power or reset button to the innards is located at the right side.

3. Set the top off to your right and take out the small screws keeping the lid on the DVD drive.

4. Now you'll need to have the DVD tray open so plug the system back in and open the tray. Turn off the power and unplug. While the system is plugged in please don't touch anything inside.

5. Please look for a white cog. It is located at the back. If you like you can use a sharpie to mark the original position of the cog. Just put a small dot where the metal dimple is pointing.

6. Now turn it a click or two clockwise.

7. Clean the laser lens while system is still open. You can use smooth cloth, don't use cotton ball.

8. You don't need to put it all back together yet because you need to test it first. Put the cover back on the DVD drive and plug the system. Now keep one hand on top of the cover to keep it down.

9. Try your disc to see if it will load. Also, make sure to test different discs. If all well, you can now put it back together and you're now good to go.

If you're still encountering the same issue, I recommend to consult a repair man to further diagnose the problem.

Hope it helps.

PS2 slim laser and disc motor don't work

I may not be the laser asembly or anything you described because absolutely nothing happened when you put a disc in. I may be a little switch at the very front of the drive right at the bottom right (near the power button) that may be damged or not being pressed by an piece of plastic on the same place on the lid. That switch recognises if the lid is closed or not so it know when to stop or start a disc. Try closing the lid harder or pushing more on that switch. hope that helps!

The disc has appeared to stop rotating. The info window continously says "reading".

DVD/CD Read/Write process: 1. The tray or carriage places the disc into the spindle or motor. 2. The spindle motor locks into place to prepare motor to spin - the disc is in free space and does not touch anything except the spindle motor. 3. The laser assembly moves into home position and attempts to focus on the disc by emitting infrared light to disc. 4. If a disc is present, the light should reflect back to the laser lens as the lens attempts to focus on the light - you will notice the lens moving up and down to focus. The lens should NOT touch anything. 5. Upon a successful focus, the spindle motor spins. 6. Data is read and sent to a buffer for decoding. 7. Success.

I herd a strange clicking noise from my ps2

It sounds like the laser assembly has become faulty, the clicking you hear may be the sled mechanism trying to move and put the laser into place so that it can read the game, or could be the spindle motor trying to spin the disc for the laser to read it. My recommendation is to replace the whole laser assembly, which includes the sled mechanism as well as the spindle motor and laser. Good Luck.

PS2 Laser

It sounds like the main issue is not reading dvd's, you can try to dis-assemble the unit and clean the eye of the laser with a cotton bud or cue tip, if that doesnt solve the issue you may need to replave the laser assembly, which is the casing that contains the laser eye,the spindle motor and the sled mechanism that the laser uses to move whilst reading. Although i had the same issue a few years ago , i was unable to source a laser as they were no longer being made, but they are still available form other spare parts providers. Good luck.

PS2 Slimline Lens Makes Cluttering Sound!

It is possable that you damaged the arm that moves the laser up and down the spindle motor, this could need replaceing, but you should check the position of the motor on the laser bed frirst and that all the screws are tight as any loosenesss in this area will cause problems, also make sure that the rails the laser assembly is seated on have grease on them and are not dry.

My son tripped over our friends ps2 and it fell to the floor upside down. The PS2 goes but the drive does not go.Any ideas how to fix this problem" Thanks

There are quite a few things that can cause a disc read error on the slim PS2. The most frequent is a bad laser, however, here is some useful troubleshooting info:

1. "Lid Closed Sensors" There are two "lid closed sensors" in the slim PS2. In a fall, it's possible that one or both have become damaged. Remove the top of the PS2 and try depressing both sensors with a game inside. The laser should move up and down at least???

IF YES, try again with the lid on... if the laser doesn't move when you close the lid, then the top casing of your PS2 cracked in the fall and is no longer depressing the lid closed sensors.

==> If the laser moves up and down OK but does not read discs, your laser was damaged in the fall. See below for a website with more troubleshooting info, pictures, and replacement cases and lasers.

IF NO, you have a bad lid closed sensor -- these are not really replaceable easily -- you may be better off replacing the whole PS2 if one or both of these lid closed sensors goes bad.

Disc doesnt spin , the lens dont move up and down , only lights red

Sounds like a motor issue, not a laser issue.

That link is for a new snake motor which moves the laser back and forth

This link is for a new spindle motor.

Disc does not turn

Hi Brad1Christy,

The laser is either dirty or burned out. When the disc does not spin, it usually is because the controller does not see any initial data coming from the laser. Clean your laser and see if you get any response.

Disc won't spin... laser doesn't come on...

ok...well all of you people are just **** him! the actual problem is that you probably dropped the ps2 and the case lid got a bit lose...... what you have to do (if you dont want to buy a whole ps2 case again) is tap the ps2 on the top of the lid when it goes into the cd browser screen and it will work perfectly fine just make sure you dont tap i too hard or else we will have another!
