Western Digital Hard Drive Help Needed

Hi, The drive you are connecting to this USB enclosure can be set up as an auto select, master, or slave drive by changing the jumpers. Suggest to check your USB enclosure manual to see what is required for this device as to the configuration of the drive jumpers. Regards, Rongg

My passport hard drive was working fine yesterday, it has my life savings of pictures and videos on it now my computer is telling me to format it every time I try and get on my hard drive please help

Please try this:
If the drive uses a optional power adapter, be sure to use it and be sure it is the correct one for the drive Be sure to plug the power adapter directly into the wall and not through a surge protector or extension cord (this diminishes the power) Plug the USB cable into the Back USB port of the computer not the front or through a Hub (diminished power again) go to Start/Run and type devmgmt.msc and press enter. In the Device Manager do you see any devices with yellow marks, or under Universal Serial Bus Controllers do you see an Unknown Device? If so, right click it and Uninstall it. Remove the USB cable from the Computer End and restart the computer. When it comes back up, plug it back in. You can also go to Start/Run and type diskmgmt.msc and press enter. In the Disk Management window it will show all the drives on the computer. If all this fails, do as JMPC suggested, then remove the drive from the enclosure and either put it on a desktop computer as a Slave drive or attach it to a USB Adapter. The logic board inside the enclosure may have failed. Once it is outside of the enclosure you can hear if the drive is spinning up or if it is clicking or if it is cold (dead).

check if is being seen in device manager...just simply open RUN then type in devmgmt.msc then hit ok..look for it under disk drive...if its there..then next stop would be computer management by opening RUN again and type in compmgmt.msc then look for disk management if its being recognized or might just need to mark it as active....

My hard drive and enclosure were working perfectly. I had to put in a different hard drive to get other data off, but when I tried to stop the drive, it said there was another program in use. There were...

First make sure usb cable connected to harddrive is working fine. try it in different usb ports. Press windows key +R key so you can see run then type in run "devmgmt.msc" then press ok so you can see device manager uninstall all usb drivers then it automatic install usb drivers. then check. Also you need to change registry for that type in run "regedit" then press ok then you can see registry editor then locate below key. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11 CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} And remove upper filter and lower filter. Then restart computer then check.
Also locate the below key and make sure it's value is 3 not 4. HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\services\usbstor make sure start value is 3 not 4. Let me know if you need further assistance. Thanks for using FixYa

Pls. help me with my motherboard

Hi iCe_sPeRm, all SATA drives are seen as all masters. While in the bios you'll want to connect the SATA with windows on it to the SATA 1 port on the board. So back in the bios you should see the 80GB drive listed first. The 320GB drive should be on the 2nd SATA port & listed second in the bios under the 80BG drive.
The most important thing to do in the bios is make sure you're 80BG drive is the only drive listed in the boot order.
Once windows has loaded you may need to change drive letters using MS windows diskmgmt.msc. To load disk manager in windows click the start button, click run & type in the run window diskmgmt.msc & click ok. You can change the order that windows see's the drives. You can also rename the drives. EX: Rename C:\ as Master_Drv or Master_80. Than rename the 320GB drive as Slave_320 ECT. This way you'll know which is what.

Problem with Hard Drive

The easiest way to do that is to purchase an external enclosure for your type of desktop hard drive. They come with usb, firewire or both types of connections. It is a simple matter to remove the hard drive from the desktop and install in the enclosure. Plug it in and connect to your notebook. The enclosure will be seen as another hard drive and you can then copy what you need from the desktop hard drive to the notebook. Once on the notebook you can burn to dvd's if you like. This will not work for copying programs. They may still work, navigate to the program folder on the hard drive, find the application folder, open it and find the starting icon, right click on it and send to desktop.
All this is moot if the drive itself is too damaged to spin.
