    I have xp not vista.

  • mlspar4 Aug 01, 2008

why do you need to create a partition and format the disk in the harddrive enclosure? won't it damage the files i have on it now?

    thanks for your help!

My passport hard drive was working fine yesterday, it has my life savings of pictures and videos on it now my computer is telling me to format it every time I try and get on my hard drive please help

Please try this:
If the drive uses a optional power adapter, be sure to use it and be sure it is the correct one for the drive Be sure to plug the power adapter directly into the wall and not through a surge protector or extension cord (this diminishes the power) Plug the USB cable into the Back USB port of the computer not the front or through a Hub (diminished power again) go to Start/Run and type devmgmt.msc and press enter. In the Device Manager do you see any devices with yellow marks, or under Universal Serial Bus Controllers do you see an Unknown Device? If so, right click it and Uninstall it. Remove the USB cable from the Computer End and restart the computer. When it comes back up, plug it back in. You can also go to Start/Run and type diskmgmt.msc and press enter. In the Disk Management window it will show all the drives on the computer. If all this fails, do as JMPC suggested, then remove the drive from the enclosure and either put it on a desktop computer as a Slave drive or attach it to a USB Adapter. The logic board inside the enclosure may have failed. Once it is outside of the enclosure you can hear if the drive is spinning up or if it is clicking or if it is cold (dead).

When i connect the drive it doesnt show up on my desktop

check if is being seen in device manager...just simply open RUN then type in devmgmt.msc then hit ok..look for it under disk drive...if its there..then next stop would be computer management by opening RUN again and type in compmgmt.msc then look for disk management if its being recognized or might just need to mark it as active....

When i plug it in to usb drive blue light flashes only once but it is not shown on my list of devices on my pc and i cant veiw photos on it

The power supply on the drive has failed. What you can do is take it out of the enclosure and put it in a new hard drive enclosure. I had the same exact problem one time. I took the drive out of the enclosure and intalled it in my computer tower.

No proble i want connect hdd to usb port by cable interface

Most of the time, you will need a hard drive enclosure that will allow the IDE or SATA connection to USB connection. These enclosures will allow you to insert the drive in the housing which will offer the USB connection cable from the enclosure. Check Ebay or other vendors for external hard drive enclosures.

Below is a link to an ebay listing for External Hard Drive enclosures.

My book essential edition - 500Gb. Model no. WD5000H1U-00 It would appear that the power supply adaptor is not working since there is no power when plugged in. It is still in warranty, any advice on how...

> it is still in warranty

If you exercise the warranty, you'll have to send the current device back to W.D.
But, W.D. will take _no_ responsibility for 'rescuing' the files currently on the disk.
Is that what you want?

Disassemble the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive.
Connect it as a 'slave' disk-drive in a desktop computer.
If it works, the disk-drive is OK.
So, look at: http://www.canadaram.com/3_5_sata_enclosures.htm
and buy a new enclosure, with a new power-supply.
(Or, buy the new enclosure locally, at any computer-store.)
Disassemble your current unit, remove the disk-drive,
and transplant the disk-drive into the new enclosure.

I have a model HD320UHE5-72 external acomdata hard drive that when pluged into usb and power turned on is not reconized by computer. Vista It worked fine until yesterday.

I devised these simple steps that tend to remedy quite a few issues with most USB portable / external hard drives and OTHER devices (though not always)

A few things to check but assumes USB and Windows for other interfaces / operating systems (mac/ Linux) similar steps may be adapted to suit.

1. Ensure it is connected directly to the computer to a USB 2.0 port not a USB 1.0 port as this can have effects on performance and reliability

2. Use only the cables that came with it NOT one that fits that may have been lying around or is longer. Not all USB cables are equal even though they should be)

3. Do not connect through an external USB HUB unless that hub is USB 2.0 AND has its own power supply.

4. Use ONLY the power supply that came with it if it has an external power supply Don’t use any other unless you know it has both the same voltage and current rating e.g. 12V 500mA anything rated below that would not work properly.

5. Always use the same port for connecting your devices. Some devices do not like being switched about. If switched they may want to install software / drivers again. This can be especially true if you move a HUB to another port

If you checked and fixed anything there and still have issues then check your hardware from CONTROL PANEL / SYSTEM / HARDWARE.
Any exclamation marks by hardware need fixing before you investigate any further

USB flash drives can fail for no apparent reason.
Sandisk Cruzers are especially bad for this.

USB hard drives should be treated with extreme care.
This is a real hard drive ! and knocks and bumps can quite literally kill them.

It is possible to remove drives from the enclosures in most cases and connect directly inside a PC to fully check it.

Note that if you hear a drive clicking or pinging this could be the worst thing you would hear.
Known as "The Click Of Death"

If none of the above steps help look at updating the drivers from the manufacturers web site in the support section.
