Simple Answers - In Plain English;

The message you received could have been avoided during the registration period. Do recall when you came to the registration part of the installation? Where it said; Register by Internet or by phone? That was the time to make your copy valid, you have a second chance if you haven't passed the 30 day registration limit. If you wish to reinstall, do this when you reach the Registration Window:

1. Click <Register by Internet>... If your operating system was OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) installed, you will be denied and directed to telephone The Microsoft Validation Center. Once you have been denied a by Internet Validation, Select Register by phone, Select <your country>, a telephone number will appear beneath that box. Dial the number that corresponds to your Country and follow the prompts.

2. You can use the automated system or say: Representative or press "0". The Automated System takes about 6 minutes, asking you to speak or press the numbers, on your telephone kepad. It's on that page, beneath the phone number.

3 The recording will ask how many computers this software has been installed in: press <1> as you or the manufacturer have installed it at least one time.

4. The recorded voice will inform you as to whether that your Key is valid. If it is, and the copy is legitimate, the Automated System will speak a new installation code. If not, wait for the Representative.

5. Explain what you see on your screen, how and why you needed to replace your Operating System (i.e.. replaced hard drive, virus, etc...) and they will walk you through the steps to validate your Key and may ask for the Key on the side of your computer. If the label is missing or cannot be read they may ask for information printed on the hub of your Genuine Windows Installation, or upgrade, disk.

TO VALIDATE THE INSTALLATION CURRENTLY INSTALLED:
If you've already restored your back-ups, installed your updates, configured your software, security settings, anti-virus, etc.. and prefer not to re-install... Follow this link to the Microsoft Windows XP FAQ page and follow the steps, posted there.

It means the product key has been used too many times. If this is a validate copy I would call Microsoft to get it reset. If it's not a validate copy I would look for another product key to use.

Karim,

It means that you are using a pirated copy. Please stop using it and uninstall it. Instead, if your requirement is of office apps, graphics, multimedia and internet, download free Knoppix from www.knoppix.com. Burn the .iso file to a CD and start booting the computer/laptop with Knoppix. You can boot up any computer. And if you want, from the CD you can install it on your computer too. It is fast, connects to the internet automatically via wifi and has builtin Open Office, which is fully compatible with MS Office, graphics packages and multimedia. You can run any video or audio file. AND IT IS FREE AND LEGAL.

Cheers.

IE8 has evidently installed Windows Genuine Advantage type validation and has judged you to have a copy of windows which is not genuine. You may buy a genuine copy of windows to fix the problem or refrain from using the software (like IE8) that has incorporated these types of checks).

Why am does this message "you may be a victim of software counterfeiting this copy of windows did not pass genuine windows validation" promptly appearing on my desktop?

It means that the copy of microsoft windows installed on your system in not a Genuine Copy (not original, duplicate copy). If you purchased it from a retailer or from an online store etc.. you can complain them about this issue. We can get rid of this notification, but it's not legal. So I don't recommend the method, but instead you proceed with the complain. I hope you understand what I mean.

If you need further help, let me know.

Good luck.

You may be a victim of software counterfeiting.

Whenever you get a genuine windows validation error you must contact Microsoft to find out why you get the message.

Temporarily you can get rid of the message doing a System Restore to a date before the genuine windows validation error appeared for the first time.

To do system restore you can go to
Start button>Programs>Accessories>System tools>System Restore.
