MARGINS: Left margin space or tab to where you want margin set and depress the mar L key. Sometimes the key has to be depressed as you hit the code key. If you want to move carrige to the left, go to margin hit margin release and bk space to where you want. Same with the right margin only use th R margin key. Code key usually keys have second message are in green, yellow or red. Use code key with the small print on the key to activate that function.... Good luck

How do I increase the margins on the typewriter

To set a margin beyond the left or right margin, move the carrier (or cursor) to that margin, press the Margin Release key, then proceed to move the carrier (or cursor) to the desired position. Then, press the Left or Right margin key to set the new margin. A beep will sound indicating the new margin has been set. When you set a new left or right margin, the previous margin is automatically cleared.

Alternatively, you can type beyond the right margin by pressing the Margin Release key and then continue typing when the carrier (or cursor) stops at the right margin. To type beyond the left margin, press the Margin Release key and then the Backspace key to move the carrier (or cursor) to the position where you want to start typing.

Remember to always use genuine Swintec ribbons and lift-off tapes for your Swintec 7040, which can be found at Swintec Typewriter Supplies .

How do i release the tab position?

At each tab stop, press the "tab release" button. Then tab to the next tab position and do the same. OR

You can put the machine in "service mode" which will erase all tab stops and reset your margins to their default positions. Easily done by turning the typewriter OFF. Then while off, press and hold "mar rel" (margin release) key on upper left side of keyboard. While holding it down and keeping it down, turn the typewriter ON. Then take your finger off the Margin Release key. The typewriter will start typing all by itself. Turn the typewriter off, then on. That will reset everything. All tab stops will be erased and margins reset to their defaults.

Margins will not hold, have to keep resetting them.

Auto margins are permanently stored in the Swintec 8014S. If you set new margins within those margins, they should hold. If you set them outside of the auto margins you will have to use the MAR REL key to release the auto margins, and then set the new margins. All margins are set by pressing the Left or Right Margin Set keys.

These settings are stored in a memory circuit that is powered by a battery that is automatically charged when the typewriter power is on. If you still have trouble with the margins releasing after you turn off the machine, you can try one of the following:
(1) Keep your typewriter on for a couple of hours so the battery can recharge and then save your margin settings
(2) Replace the battery which may have died after all these years. You would need to bring your Swintec to a local dealer for the part and replacement service.

Hope this helps!
