If sent directly to Nikon, you should expect somewhere around $300 for a replacement shutter and will likely take 1-3 weeks.

Good evening I'm in Lima Peru on a medical mission away from the US for two weeks. I am on my 2nd week and my Nikon D200 stopped working. Before I left I thought the batteries were old and I replaced them...

Sorry to hear about your camera. Hope you already fixed it. If not, could you please precise what lens are you using? What are the precise description of the last "black out"? Please try to be as precise as possible(Circumstances/Was it inside or outside/Light condition/moisture/Any peripheral devices connected etc.)

I can't tell the diff between VR and VR OFF with my Nikon 18-200 lens. Is there a foolproof way to tell if VR is functional?

Charles, I can save you the effort. The D200 lacks the menu item I suggested and will not show any symbols in the viewfinder or LCD to indicate which VR setting you have the lens set to.

But Ken Rockwell's guide to the lens has a big clue: VR takes a moment to stabilise, so you ideally need to half press the shutter release and wait a second or so before firing the shutter.

I don't want to plagiarise his excellent article, so instead suggest that you click here to read what the man has to say himself. He discusses the benefits of your lenses VR early in the article, but you may want to skip right down the page to the heading, "How to use the VR".

Ken has also created an excellent alternative D200 users' guide, click here.

Good luck, and please take a moment to rate my reply.

P.S. If the hotlinks don't work then the 18-200 lens review is at:-

and the D200 guide is at:-

Nikon D200 has become nearly impossible to grab images

False low-battery warnings, focusing, and metering problems may be the result of poor contact between the body and certain lenses. Try removing your lens and thoroughly cleaning the contacts. I would recommend using a contact cleaner, but rubbing alcohol will also work. Remember that the whole ring needs to be cleaned. If that does not work, try scraping the battery contacts.

How can I control the shutter speed on my d200?

In Programmed (P), Shutter-priority (S), and Manual (M) modes, turn the main command dial (the one in the back). In Aperture-priority (A) mode, turning the subcommand dial (the one in the front) controls the aperture and changes the shutter speed to suit.

This all assumes you haven't gone into the menus and switched the functions of the two command dials.

Sony DSC H-5 Camera slow response time

There is a diaphram between the shutter button and the shutter that does the focus. Pushing the button half way down pre-focuses and then the picture is instantanious. If the diaphram is broken it take a while before the shutter takes the picture. One of the AA batteries may be defective so try another set and see if that is better. There is also a slight possibility that the secondary battery (hidden within the camera) has gone bad.

Total shutter counter D200 (maintenance menu?)

Nikon doesn't make that information available; but if you want, you can try IExif. It is a freeware program which purports to be able to give you that type of information and more from your digital camera. It is available at the following link:
