Air from freezer and refrigerator is not cold. Now motor/fan is not kicking on. I know it is hard to say without seeing it but is it worth fixing.

do you have a full frost pattern (coating) on freezer coils or see a ice ball, if ice ball Leak in system or bad valve in compressor. not worth fixing. go on (repair clinic .com).
you have a dampener and a fan to let the cold air go to all the areas check to make sure fan is running push in light switch in freezer and llisten for fan could be problem or no power to fan from main control board.
Dampener is flapper door that lets cold air from freezer go into ref. section
are your doors sealed, gaskets, frapper between door on ref section closing.
also your return air ducts need to be clear of ice, is your ice maker working that means that it is below 10 degees and repairable.

Freezer side working but fridge side is not?

Since we know the machine is producing cold, that is a plus. The cold is created in the freezer. From here, a fan moves it through vents into the frig. From the frig it goes back into the freezer and makes a big loop. What you have here is a motor to the fan in the freezer gone out. If you want to fix it yourself I'd be happy to tell you how. If you want to know if it's worth fixing, I would say most definitely. I would expect $60-$100 for the fan motor then labor on top of that. If you have a model number I could look it up for you :)

Freezer gets cold, upper refrigerator does not. Looks like there is an opening for cold air to come into the refrigerator, it isn't blocked. Air just isn't rising from freezer to fridge.

you have bad fan motor, located behind freezer wall, accessible from the front inside freezer, lots of disassembly required-awkward repair, but worth it

My refrigerator just showed problem code Er ff. Can I open the fan motors to defost without making matters worst

I would interpret "ff" to mean freezer fan. I would assume that the code means that the freezer fan is not turning. When this happens, cold air does not get distributed well inside the freezer and very little cold air is sent to the refrigerator section.

The fan is likely behind an access plate in the freezer section. Remove the screws and look at the fan. If it's not turning, you will have to replace the fan motor.

Food in freezer is thawing, compressor very hot to the touch

It sounds like the motor to the circulating fan is wearing out . This fan is hard to diagnose as it will spin the blade , but as you said it will not spin fast enough to circulate air thru the freezer and refrigerator. The motor is DC non brush type. It will cost a minimum of $300.00 to repair/replace this fan assembly, but it is worth that compared to replacing the refrigerator

Refrigerator section does not cool; freezer works fine

Check the settings first. They should be set to the factory settings in most cases. Otherwise check the back of your freezer to see if it is icing up, you may need to remove the back panel to see the ice. If this is the case the ice may be preventing the fan to circulate the cold air into the freezer and you will need a new defrost timer. However if there is no ice and the fan never kicks on you may need a new fan motor.

Kenmore elite 596 73503201 no cooling in top compartment

if the freezer is getting cold the problem is due to the cold air from the freezer not getting into the refrigerator. There are several things that can cause this problem. The coils in the freezer icing up and not defrosting properly is one of the things that can cause the refrigerator not to get cold enough. Another problem is the fan that blows the cold air from the freezer compartment into the refrigerator, not working. When the compressor is running open the refrigerator's door and push the switch that makes the light go out. You should hear the fan blowing the cold air from the freezer into the refrigerator, when this switch is pushed in. If the fan is working then you will need to find what is blocking the air flow. Iced up coils are a common problem. The icing problem can be due to a defective defrost timer or something defective in the defrost circuit. Click here for more information. Check for these problems and let me know what you have found.

Burning Rubber smell coming from fridge

try taking the bottom panel off and vacuming all the dust on the coils. The dust may be heating up and burning. The coils are usually at the bottom of the fridge. Check to see if the fan is running also.

Troubleshoot fridge repair

Your description is a little hard to understand, but sounds like an evaporator fan is not working. Its the one inside the freezer half. Its not visible, but there are vents that air can be felt by if its working. Or remove the panel covering it to see.
