Question about Minn Kota Riptide St Saltwater 80 Bow Mount Trolling Motor

2 Answers

Batteries are full load, checked the voltage and it is 24 including at the plug in the bow but after 5,10 minutes of use the power is lost. It seems to me the TM never gets all the power. It worked fine for 1 year until I asked a mechanic to tighten the connection between the TM and the boat as it was loose.

I tested the power at the plug in the bow of the boat and it is the correct 24 V. So, the cables to the bow of the bot seem to be fine. After that, the power cables go into the TM (the part that connects to the bracket).
    What else can I check?

Hi

Be careful when using your motor when fishing in thick vegetation. If this wraps around the prop it causes overloads and higher currents. The high currents cause general overheating which affects all parts of the motor. Check for low battery voltages and for loose cable connections that cause resistance and loss of motor power.
1. Check for loose connections in the speed switch and potentiometer.
2. Check for loose connections within the top housing.
3. Check the rotary switch for burning or other visible damage.
4. Check contact continuity or resistance with a multi-meter or short out each speed terminal to verify the switch contacts. If switch is in good condition one or more speed coils may have failed.
Lastly you need the right batteries, the right charging system, the right wiring and the right charging to keep your trolling motor online.

The symptoms which you experience are as a result of poor wiring or contact to or from the batteries. It is possible that when the mechanic tried to tighten the unit he tampered one of the cables of the unit. Simply get a better mechanic to examine the power connection cables to and from the unit. The problem is as a result of partial contact so should not be too hard to fix all you need is just careful examination.
hope this solution has been helpful?

APC Back-UPS ES500. Battery is new replacement UB1280, and battery has charge and runs fine if unit not plugged in. However, if unit is plugged in to power back-up side outlets in unit don't work.

there are 2 parts of a UPS .
the charge side
and (battery is obvious)
the inverter side.
if the charger fails, all is lost. (are the batteries in backwards?)
if the charger works (volt meter tells you that)
then the inverter is bad. (this unit is not full time UPS , but part time, this means it switches over to inverter at power fail.
(on full time sys. inverter runs full time, like the name states)
the unit, you mean the load right.?
the UPS side plugged into a load. and the load is now dead.

the Backup plugs should work if the mains are hot.
if you kill mains, the inverter will fire off, (hear the squeal?)
and give you 500 watts for some minutes, sucking the batteries dry. (see load run time curves)
I used to do service on HUGE UPS systems, some with 100s of batteries. 3 to 5kw too.
on ours there is a port on the rear , we connect and can
check everything "BEST brand" even charge voltage.
did you look on APC site for special software and connections?

the manual does cover trouble shooting, ever read that?
RTM? start there, its online, for sure.

Hello, You have several points to check. #1 check your wiring connections--- plug, plug socket, wiring connections internal of trolling motor, condition of wiring to battery, battery terminal connection & charge of battery. #2 borrow someones DVM (digital multimeter) and check the resistance of the speed control as you turn it without any wires connected to it. #3 if problem not found take 2 aspirin and E-mail me of test results "for further review".

Hey SCOTT ..
Get a multimeter (to check voltage) Verify you have 24 volts coming to the front plug. Now - VERIFY that you are getting 24 volts to the switch. ..All OK..- Now to check the power switch. Disconnect the two wires on the power switch and CAREFULLY connect them by hand.. now SAFELY see if the prop will turn. If the switch is bad, bypassing it will make the prop spin!
..If the prop still does not work,, keep following the voltage.. For more help, trust these guys!:

I don't think you have a plug wire or spark plug issue. If the starter solenoid is clicking that is an indication of a bad connection somewhere in you starting system. I would check all of the wires in your starting system and make sure they are tight. You may also have a bad starter solenoid. Have your alternator checked fro proper output as well, any auto part store will do this check for free. Also have you battery load tested, just because it is putting out the correct voltage doesnt mean it is putting out enough amperage under load.

Your inverter has a peak of 3000 watts rating and should power that hair dryer. Make sure your batteries are in good shape. The inverter can only put out what it takes in. 1800 watt demand on the inverter requires 1800 watts from the batteries.

If the voltage on your boat's plug drops down to .8v, then the problem is almost certainly in the boat. Trace the wires. You probably have a corroded wire connection somewhere. If there is a fuse in the circuit, check it and it's holder very closely.

Converting From 12/24 to Starght 24 Volt

if it is 24v. then you need to connect 2 battery in parallel. since the battery is only 12v.
if one battery is shoing red and the other is sohwing green, that means you are using 12v only, not the 24v.
    connetion as follow:
positve of battery 1 to the motor, the negative of battery 1 to postive of battery 2. the negative of battery 2 to the motor.
